Houthis were literally the last terror group to leave Syria during liberation in 2024.

Here’s Al-Mortadha, the Houthi guy who was responsible for arms movement in Syria. He remained inside IRGC ops room in🇸🇾 until the final hours of Assad’s fall and only retreated to Iraq with the news of Assad fleeing Damascus. Basically a terrorist who did his best to keep dictator Assad in power.

Al-Mortadha was kebaboed a week after returning to Yemen.

If reports of a Saudi airstrike on Yemen’s Hodeidah port are confirmed, in my opinion this would mark a very serious escalation-not simply another retaliatory strike, but potentially the beginning of a new phase in the Saudi-Houthi confrontation.

- Hodeidah is not an ordinary military target. It is the Houthis’ main outlet on the Red Sea and a crucial hub for fuel, commercial goods and humanitarian supplies. Striking it would mean targeting the economic and logistical infrastructure that sustains Houthi-controlled Yemen.
The timing would also be significant. The Houthis have announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia and have already threatened shipping linked to the Kingdom. Riyadh may therefore be signalling that any attempt to restrict Saudi access to the Red Sea will carry a direct cost inside Yemen.
This would also suggest that the relative Saudi restraint maintained since the 2022 truce is coming to an end. Riyadh would no longer be relying exclusively on mediation, deterrence and indirect pressure, but would be returning to direct military action against strategic Houthi infrastructure.

- The real Saudi concern is broader than individual attacks on tankers. With navigation through the Strait of Hormuz already under pressure, the Red Sea and the Yanbu export route have become even more important. A Houthi campaign against Saudi shipping would therefore be seen in Riyadh as a strategic threat, not a limited Yemeni provocation.

- A Saudi strike on Hodeidah could also open the way to wider military coordination with the United States, even without direct joint operations. Washington would continue focusing on Iran, while Saudi Arabia would deal with the Yemeni front.

- This would also create a serious complication for Islamabad. Pakistan is tied to Saudi Arabia by a mutual defence arrangement, while at the same time trying to preserve a mediating role between Iran and the United States. Greater Saudi military activism against the Houthis- who are closely aligned with Tehran-could place Pakistan under increasing pressure to demonstrate where its strategic commitments ultimately lie.

-Islamabad’s credibility as a neutral or at least acceptable intermediary could therefore be weakened. Tehran may begin to view Pakistan less as an independent mediator and more as a country structurally constrained by its defence relationship with Riyadh. In that sense, an escalation in Yemen would not remain confined to the Red Sea: it could directly affect the diplomatic track surrounding the Iran-US conflict.

- The likely Houthi response would be attacks on Saudi economic and energy infrastructure: Jizan, Yanbu, southern airports, oil facilities or additional Saudi-linked vessels. After a strike on Hodeidah, failing to respond would damage the credibility of their announced blockade.

-The greatest danger is therefore not the single airstrike itself, but what could follow: the collapse of the informal truce, renewed fighting along Yemen’s western coast and the reopening of a full Saudi-Houthi war.
If confirmed, Riyadh would not merely be punishing the Houthis. It would be militarily challenging their attempt to control Saudi access to the Red Sea-turning the regional confrontation into a simultaneous struggle over both Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, while also narrowing the diplomatic space available to Pakistan.

My wife, our children, and I are immensely heartbroken to learn that Chris Affleck has passed away.

Chris was far more than a friend. She was like a mother to me and Maram, and a grandmother to our two, and later three, children during the time we lived in Cambridge between 2019 and 2020. She took our kids to the Children’s Museum, accompanied Maram to the Cambridge Public Library as she learned English, and made sure we never felt alone.

Thousands of miles away from our families, when Maram gave birth to Mostafa in May 2020, Chris brought us meals, comfort, and the kind of love only family gives.

Many people know Chris as the mother of Ben and Casey Affleck. What many, perhaps most, do not know is that she was also one of the most steadfast advocates for Palestine. During the Covid pandemic, she stopped by to see us with a “Free Gaza” poster displayed on her car.

Whenever I returned to Cambridge or Boston to give a reading or speak, Chris was there. She always greeted us with tears, warm encouragement, and thoughtful gifts for our children.

The last time we saw each other was after my reading at Harvard in February 2025.

In May 2023, I gave Chris a necklace and a ring embroidered by my sister-in-law, who remains in Gaza today. Chris was overjoyed and immediately put them on.

We will miss you dearly, Chris. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, and your unwavering solidarity.
May you rest in peace.
