most emotional feature added in a pokemon game.

back in 2012, pokemon black 2 and white 2 dropped as direct sequels set two years after the original black and white story in the unova region.

one unique feature was memory link. it let you connect your old black or white save to unlock flashbacks, special dialogues, and hidden content across the region. characters would mention your original trainer by name instead of just “a trainer,” and you could even rematch bianca near nuvema town using her old team.

but the real secret surprise came through normal gameplay. while walking through tall grass or exploring routes, players would suddenly encounter wild pokemon with a glowing green digital effect and a unique sound.

catching one revealed an easter egg. its original trainer was listed as n with trainer id 00002. these special encounters were n’s former teammates, the pokemon he released at the end of black and white. they were still living free across unova, waiting to be found again.

one of the most thoughtful and emotional continuity features the series has ever done.
