the man whose manga sold 260 million copies, designed the characters and monsters of japan's most-played rpg series, and was credited by every major shonen creator after him as the reason they ever picked up a pen, rarely left nagoya and almost never gave interviews.

his name was akira toriyama.

his career started in 1980 with a comedy comic called dr. slump. it ran for four years in weekly shonen jump and sold thirty-five million copies. four years later he started dragon ball. it ran in jump for eleven years and reached more than eighty countries through its anime adaptation. son goku became one of the most recognizable characters ever drawn.

in 1986 enix released a role-playing game in japan called dragon quest. the character and monster designs were toriyama's. the slime he sketched became the unofficial mascot of japanese rpgs. the series has sold over eighty million copies worldwide.

in 1995 squaresoft released chrono trigger. toriyama designed every character. the game is still routinely named the greatest of its decade.

the testimonials are unanimous. eiichiro oda, who draws one piece, said dragon ball was his literal everything. masashi kishimoto, who drew naruto, said he was reborn through toriyama's art. tite kubo. yoshihiro togashi. they all credit him.

he died on march 1, 2024, at sixty-eight. his studio held the news for seven days so his family could grieve in private. when the announcement came, japanese television broadcast tribute segments for hours. world leaders sent condolences. the official dragon ball x account posted a single black silhouette of goku and the post received millions of likes within hours.

he never moved to tokyo. he never went on a press tour. he stayed in nagoya and drew. he said he just liked drawing.

the slime is still on every dragon quest cover. goku is still on millions of walls across every continent. the man who drew them sat alone in a small studio called bird, in a city he never left, and gave the world to people he would never meet.
