The Irish people voted to allow the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty on the basis of a Protocol guaranteeing that on Security and Defence the EU would be guided by respect for the principles of the UN Charter and international law and that Ireland's traditional policy of military neutrality was not affected by the Treaty. Our electricity grid is in danger of being overwhelmed, we have woefully underdeveloped water infrastructure – and we are all paying higher energy bills. But who in Government is saying “before it goes any further, I need safeguards in place to protect Irish people”?

And we’re all paying for this. A recent report by Seán Fearon for Friends of the Earth estimates that Irish households paid out €715 million in higher electricity bills because of data centres up to 2023. If their growth continues at high levels, we will pay €1.43 billion up to 2034.

Nowhere is the audience told that this NGO, Doras, gets €1.056 million (90% of its income) from the taxpayer each year.

It employs 21 people, whose combined salaries cost ~€800k.

Expect to hear from all the other taxpayer funded Migrant-rights NGOs throughout the week.

Sobering thread here from @Nick_Delehanty on the state of crime here in Ireland. As a victim of crime myself - my house was burgled, damaged & ransacked, I’ll never forget the Garda (a good, dedicated Garda), telling me the person would never be caught, the burglary would not be followed up, it seems it’s not a priority. So the coast was clear for repeat offending. People advised me, the reason the Gardai are called in is not because anything will be done, but to get the PULSE number for the insurance company. That’s not to blame individual Gardai who work hard, are frequently frustrated in their duties, & often sickened to see career criminals waltz out of court. But it is an indication of how bad things are here in Ireland. We need a serious reform of the justice system, but not in the direction our woke NGOs are driving us. Authentic charity/mercy integrates prudence & justice.

Ongetwijfeld een topmaatregel ‘voor het klimaat’.

Maar ik had Brussel dus onderschat…

Want: sinds 12 augustus geldt de nieuwe EPPWR, de Europese Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

Een verordening die o.m. bedoeld is om de regels te harmoniseren en -onthou dit goed- de interne markt beter te laten functioneren.

En hoe harmoniseert Europa dat?

Juist: door géén Europees registratiesysteem te maken.😳

Elke lidstaat krijgt zijn eigen register…

Dus…verkoop je als Belgische onderneming rechtstreeks verpakte producten aan klanten in Duitsland, Frankrijk, Spanje en Nederland?

—> Dan moet je je in vier verschillende nationale systemen registreren, volgens vier nationale procedures en verplichtingen rond producentenverantwoordelijkheid.🤦‍♂️

—> Sterker nog: bij rechtstreekse grensoverschrijdende verkoop moet je in de bestemmingslanden ook een lokale vertegenwoordiger voor die producentenverantwoordelijkheid aanduiden.🙃

Single Market krijgt zo een bijzondere betekenis: 27 landen, 27 registers, 27 administraties…🤡

Maar Brussel heeft gelukkig aan de ‘gebruiksvriendelijkheid’ gedacht: de nationale registers moeten links bevatten naar de websites van de andere nationale registers.🤡

Geen Europees loket dus. Wel 27 loketten die naar elkaar linken.🫣

Ter info: dit is geen satire. Het staat gewoon zo in de regelgeving.

Stel je nu een kleine Belgische webshop voor die een product van €40 verkoopt.

Een Duitser bestelt er eentje. Een Fransman ook. Dan een Spanjaard.

Fantastisch toch? Exact toch waarvoor de Europese interne markt ooit bedoeld was: honderden miljoenen potentiële klanten zonder handelsgrenzen, niet?

Alleen zal die ondernemer nu allicht besluiten die buitenlandse klanten te niet te bedienen omdat Europa grensoverschrijdend verkopen administratief zwaar bemoeilijkt.

Het fabeltje van één Europese interne markt krijgt zo wel een bijzondere invulling als je je land per land moet registreren om er een kartonnen doos naartoe te sturen.

Maar goed, de planeet is gered!

(Waarschijnlijk zonder een welvarend Europa, maar dat zal ze in Brussel duidelijk een zorg wezen…)

Well done the EU. This is probably the most retrograde regulation of the last 20 years. It’s going to kill all small and medium exporters within the EU. Where are the founding principles of the single market now?

This might be the most European Commission thing ever, and it is insane on levels 1, 2 and 7:

“Companies that ship goods across borders will have to register in a directory in every destination country. This way, national authorities are supposed to find out who is importing which packaging where. If a company is active throughout the EU, it has to approach 27 different places, with 27 different deadlines, forms, and fees.

In addition, companies that have no branch in the destination country are supposed to appoint an authorized representative there. In other words, a contact person whom the local authorities can hold accountable. For many small businesses – such as booksellers, vintners, or beekeepers – this is too cumbersome and expensive. Hundreds therefore announced on Facebook and Instagram that they would stop shipping to other EU countries.

The EU Commission is now aware of the problem. ‘We encourage the member states not to apply the new rules and not to impose any fines,’ a senior official of the authority told a small group of journalists in Brussels last week. It’s a bizarre state of affairs: The European Union passes a law – and then assures citizens that they can ignore it. Violations won’t be punished anyway.”

Looks like the EU might have just killed the single market by mistake. As of this morning if you are a business in one EU country and want to send your product in a box to another EU country you have to register as a packaging producer. No, there isnt a single EU registration scheme. 27 countries, 27 registrations. Up to £1000 a time PER COUNTRY and the Swedish registry is closed for the summer holidays.

This is awesome in its own special way. I have no idea how something like this made it through the first draft. The EU has been trying to stop Chinese online sales for ages without breaching WTO rules, but this is like detonating a nuclear weapon in your own house to stop a burglar stealing your spoons. #ppwr
