Last Sunday, I should have been in Abuja Nigeria participating in this ordination of the first eldership in our church plant, Trinity Baptist Church. In 2018, we sent Peter Abutu Joshua to plant this church. Now, 7 years later, the church has reached autonomy. Praise God with us!

One of the things that will become clear to you as you begin to study the book to the Hebrews is how Jesus Christ is better than the created order.

Jesus is better than the angels. He is better than Moses. He is the mediator of the new covenant.

There were promises of the old, and the better promises of the new. The writer’s goal was to persuade the Hebrew Christians not to go back to their old ways amidst the flood of persecution.

Another thing you will quickly notice as you get to Chapter 6 is that God is the one making promises. He is the one reconciling the world to himself and His purposes will stand.

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, (Hebrews 6:13 ESV)

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, (Hebrews 6:17 ESV)

As if to make it more certain to us, Jesus Christ still intercedes for the saints. We get weary, we get bruised, we get discouraged in the journey of ours together, but His promises are sure.

What did the writer say about the new covenant?

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. (Hebrews 9:15 ESV)

The Hebrew Christians were encouraged throughout the book not to return to their old ways, then , there will no longer be forgiveness of sins. Rather, they should persevere to the very end. That which has been handed to them must be held firmly.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23 ESV)

God has made specific promises to us in the New Testament, closely mirroring those from the old. He said:

16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,"
17 then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." (Hebrews 10:16-17 ESV)

The New Testament is replete with promises for the believers. Ephesians 1 for instance.

There is only one COVENANT for all saints.

In all of these, who is preeminent? Who is the focus? Who is the high priest? Who died for us? Who intercedes for us? Who cleanses us? Who purchased us? Who is preserving us? Who gave us the promises? Who gave us the covenant?

Answer all these questions when you read the book again.

How does Arome Osayi come in? Arome Osayi does not understand what this New Covenant is, and has therefore created one for himself. This was necessary for him because he had to elevate himself somehow above everyone else around him. He commands the presence of God according him. He is a big man in heaven , according to him. Big man in heaven? What does that mean ? Big man to who? You who are saved by grace? You who will praise God forever for your salvation? How did he determine his bigness? What should that communicate to his listeners?

There will be more videos of him shared from time to time and how those who follow him should take their gaze off of him and cling to Christ. The job of any preacher is to take you to your savior through his preachings. Christ must be manifestly held in front of you at all time so you can be conformed to his image, and not the image of your pastor.

There is a sense in which the faith of others can be a source of encouragement to you in your Christian life, the book of Hebrews is replete with this, yet, all the exploits were done through faith in Christ, the immutable King of glory, who is the just and justifier of sinners.

Take off your gaze from Arome Osayi’s fables and stories, put your gaze on Christ. He will never fail you. Don’t let any man elevate himself to you as if he is something. Always look for Jesus Christ and His exaltation in every sermon.

An unfruitful mind is not a flex

I did not think it was good to leave the assumptions of my position at the mercy of misunderstandings of a short clip.

A more charitable listening of the video would have prevented many from assuming it was a condemnation of all tongues as a gnostic practice. Even by common sense objectivity, assuming that I said that would mean I'm also saying Paul and the early church that the 1 Corinthians was written to were doing gnostic things.

Isn't that silly?

The video was a small part of a teaching on how to pray properly as a Christian though the clip itself is sufficient enough to pass the intended message. And I addressed one of the common malpractices today and abuse of tongues. This malpractice stems from a defective and quasi-gnostic doctrine of man and God which greys the boundary between the two. It leads to ideas like using tongues to charge your "spirit" or inner man and lowers the gaze of Christians from God above to themselves. It is that particular but common abuse I was referring to.

But more on that later. I want to start by explaining one foundational idea.

Edification in all the Bible refers to something that happens in the mind whereby it apprehends truth and by so doing becomes more stable in growth and being more like Christ. It's a change that accords with sanctification. That clip was too short for anyone who doesn't follow me to know the full breath of "knowledge" in the clip. And many just assumed knowledge is about mere facts.

I want to give credit to Rev @gideonodoma for elevating the quality of the conversation. His has been the best rebuttal worth responding to. And I'm glad we have come a long way from debating the necessity of sacraments and neo-marcionism. It's really nice and I'm very happy to have this debate. It's a proper application of analytical philosophy in biblical theology. But I strongly disagree with Rev Odoma except I also misunderstand what I've read him say.

In order to prevent this post from being too long, I won't post scriptures but I strongly encourage you to check.

In Eph 4 Paul states that the ministry gifts are given to grow the church in knowledge and by so doing grow them in stature of Christ. Also, to speak the truth in love is how people grow.
In Rom 12:1-2 Paul says tranformation is by renewing of mind. This is the way to prove the will of God.
In 1 Pet 1:2 Peter says its the truth that we crave that helps us grow unto salvation.
Paul tells Timothy its scripture that makes wise. He tells the Ephesian church in Acts 20 that it is the word that he commends them to that builds them up and gives them an inheritance.
In fact, all the Pauline prayers are about believers apprehending the truth in their minds.
Even faith doesn't come except by hearing the word.

And this truth or knowledge is not just facts but includes all awareness of the mind.

I really have seen no scriptures that refer to building up a man where the man's mind is not involved. I look forward to seeing one.

Using the word "cognitive" is to weaken the my position. It's an apprehension of the truth in facts but knowing beyond facts and being aware. Like how the disciples hearts burned within them even when they didn't know for a fact that they were talking to Jesus yet. You can know God loves you without having thr facts a deep theologian has.

This is the knowledge that the Bible teaches builds up or edifies. This is what I mean. A growing awareness and apprehension of God and His will.

Now to steelman the position of my opponents. What is their edification?

If edification is not awareness or apprehension of truth in the mind, what is this edification that is outside the mind?

This thing will end in "we are all saying the same thing".

WE ARE NOT SAYING THE SAME THINGS.

I made this mistake once with a Prosperity preacher who thought we could be friends.

But we are not saying the same thing.

What we are saying, what the Lord Himself, the Prophets and Apostles teach us is that -

1- The goal is to do God's will. The desire is to serve God. The desire is not to be rich. This is clearly what Paul teaches.

Believers can be rich in pursuing God's will. Believers can be poor in pursuing God's will. God's will can demand poverty, middle class or you to be rich. It is God who gives one 5, another 2 another 1 talent. David served God and so did Elijah. Elijah was not rich not by any demented stretch of the imagination. John the Baptist that God said is greatest of men born of women was not rich, not even in the most twisted Bible reading possible.

2- God will provide for us to do His will. We will not all be rich but we will have at the least food and clothing like the ravens and Lillies. We will have enough to do God's will.

3 - Jesus did not die for people to be rich. Jesus didn't die to change material state in this world. Jesus died to save our souls from sin. Jesus died so that we can have the true solution to poverty, eternity with Him.

This is why poor believers are not less in their salvation if that poverty is from serving God.

4- Poverty is not the evil. Riches is not the good. Having Jesus is the good. So we can rejoice even in having little if God uses it to keep us with Jesus. We don't judge God's goodness by human material state but by His ability to bring all things to perfection on that day He returns. This is why the Apostles can teach patience till death and Paul can celebrate weakness.

5- Believers ought to live their lives with this sobriety. Let the rich not dress to turn heads. Let the poor not hide in shame in the presence of the rich. Let every man's boast be in that He has true life, who is Jesus. Jesus is our life.

6- Money is not necessary to do God's will. It makes doing God's will MORE COMFORTABLE but it's absence does not stop God's will.

Thus believers should not spend their lives thinking of money. Their heart should be on God who is their true treasure

It's a nice to have but even if we don't have it we can fulfil God's plan for us. In God's hands, my visions is not a mere hallucination because I'm poor. And we have so many heroes of faith in the bible proving it. If money was the inhibitor to fulfil God's plan then the early church would have failed. Elijah and Elisha failed. The Apostles failed. Even the Lord failed. These people didn't need riches to do what they did.

What Prosperity preachers are saying is that:

1- God wants every believer to be rich or at least God does not want anyone to be poor in this passing world.

2- Jesus died for riches or at least Jesus died so that no one should be poor.

3- If you are not rich or if you are poor it is because you're not doing something spiritual.

Because Jesus died for material things, it means your lack of material things is a result of your poor performance in spiritual things one way or another. If you are sinful and rich it always means you've gotten some principles right which poor sanctified people have failed to do.

4- Poverty itself is evil. Poverty itself is like sin. God cannot be in your poverty. God's will cannot demand poverty from you. God's will must always mean enjoyment and status. If God sends you, you cannot be poor I'd you're faithful.

5- Money is mandatory to do God's will. How much money you have is proportional to how much of God's will you do. Thus the value of a man is in how much money he has. If a man is poor he can't do much. If a man does not have money, even his God given visions are hallucinations.

Thus believes should think money. They can think of God but they should always think money.
