@JIdinye Interesting point. While I think it's an oppressive idea as well, I also think that increased CanCon airtime could lead to the discovery of music some didn't know existed. I can really see both sides of this debate! #MUS2011F20
@johnloveless11 Totally agree with supporting home-grown artists and broadening reach. I've been surprised before by Canadian artists that I automatically assumed were American. Additional exposure can be a great thing. #mus2011f20
While enforcing a quota on Canadian music was once an effective concept, it's almost irrelevant today because of the way people consume music. Enforcing it in one area won't stop people from continuing to listen to what they want on Spotify, Apple Music, etc. #mus2011f20
@DanielWNeill1 I listened to both studio and live versions and I think I like the live track more. The vocals really raw and almost eerie. Thanks for sharing! #mus2011f20
@BKrilow@SheldonRyan1@McGrath_14 Interesting viewpoint. In my opinion, popular music sometimes sounds overproduced. While I appreciate the role of producers and engineers, I value the role of the musicians more. Nothing compares to watching good musicians performing live and unfiltered. #MUS2011F20
@SaraPPowell1@BKrilow I think there's something special about listening to an original song live by the original artist rather than on a record, although I also appreciate good covers. Hearing other interpretations of an original gives a different perspective of the music. #MUS2011F20
I agree with Wald's assessment, although I also think it pertains to live music rather than just covers. The local music scene has changed drastically in the last two decades with a noticeable decline in original bands and music and more interest in the club scene. #MUS2011f20
@again_mac Not sure whether it's a bigger factor but it's definitely an important factor for sure. Unfortunate and unjust that coloured artists' were taken advantage of in this way. #MUSI2011F20
Authors of original music considered covers "schlock" likely because the music was written with the intention of being performed in a certain way or having a specific artist interpret it. Covers today allow for creative interpretations across different genres. #MUS2011F20
Cover music allows for different interpretations of the original. As someone who has covered many songs live and otherwise, I was always stronger at interpreting music rather than writing it. Here's a Blondie cover a younger me recorded. https://t.co/mJgJEftWGl #MUS2011F20
@sabrina_068 There's always a chance that a cover could be more popular than the original. The issue with "schlock" was likely just that - songs were covered and reproduced for the purpose of being popular while the original was often uncredited or ignored. #MUS2011F20
@RareOhToo As someone who performs covers (or used to) live I always gave a shout out to the original artist. Often a cover is a form of flattery and allows a different perspective or interpretation of the original #MUS2011F20
@erikajanesqu This is an excellent insight. I think it goes to show that a legendary musician isn't defined by vocal capability alone. The ability to create unique, distinct and appealing music that can stand the test of time better speaks to a limitless musician like Ray Charles. #MUS2011F20
@SamJacobson19 I thought of Gold Digger too when I heard I Got a Woman and I immediately thought about how the meaning of both songs is completely different in isolation. Kind of an ironic way to sample a song that means one thing and alter its lyrics to suit. #MUS2011F20
Ray Charles was a pioneer in many ways but particularly for integrating a breaking voice technique into his music. He may have done this as a way to create a unique sound by combining imperfect or varied vocals with the consistency and smoothness of his music.Β #MUS2011F20
@alexnic2001 @sharonburge Yes! I use Spotify too and always listen to the playlists that are made for me or recommended to discover more music I might like. #mus2011f20
@erikajanesqu This sounds like some impressive technology! Really neat that it accommodates records and allows you to stream on the same machine. It's nice to see that vinyl is still alive through this new tech! #mus2011f20
Music tech has come a long way in a short time; from my Sony Walkman that allowed me to take music anywhere to streaming music from my Apple Watch or iPhone today. I have access to more musical genres than ever now, allowing me to broaden playlists and discover more! #mus2011f20
@DanielWNeill1 Ellie Goulding for me. I was a huge fan of her Lights and Halcyon albums. Everything she released after that seemed produced for mainstream radio and solely for the purpose of becoming a hit. Her musical integrity after Halcyon is questionable imo #mus2011f20
