I’ve been there a couple of times. Walked all over all 4 quarters like a good little tourist. Got scolded by a Jewish grandma for holding hands in public at the western wall. Never been spat on. Never witnessed any spitting.
I don’t recommend any PDA by the wall. Grandmas don’t play.

Yes, neighbors turned on them. But there was also a force of goodness - a lot of people who help hide and transport theme.
I think the Jewish folks have an incredible sense of identity and tradition rooted in something divine. They don’t need campaign to be more popular but anyone who have been there know it’s a special place, a special people.
