I’ve been asked by friends and media to comment on the recent Dr. Fauci document dump. There are plenty of people in Washington, D.C. who say and do things more for themselves than for our country. Tony Fauci is not one of them. He served this nation -mostly in the shadows - for 50+ years, until a pandemic and an election suddenly thrust him into the spotlight. Like any of us, I’m sure there are things he would do differently with the benefit of hindsight. But I 💯 believe everything he said and did was driven by the best intentions for our country. 1/3

Six months after the killing of her son, Alex Pretti, his mother is sharing a heartbreaking message about the grief she says has only deepened with time.

In an emotional post marking the six-month anniversary of Alex’s death, she writes that no one has been held accountable and says her family has never received an apology or even a single phone call from government officials, hospital personnel, or the Minneapolis Police Department. At the same time, she expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support her family has received from people around the world, urging others to continue speaking out and never forget what Alex stood for.

“Today marks the six-month anniversary of Alex’s murder. No-one has been held accountable, no apologies, not a single phone call from any governmental official, hospital personnel, or the Mpls police dept. Six-months of pain, a roller-coaster of trauma over and over. Every time another a death, another mention, a picture, a tribute, a sorrow so deep. I wonder how to move forward. Will I ever get over this loss and this pain? Will I ever be able to enjoy life again? How does one live knowing that I have no power to change what has happened?

And yet the out-reach not only from Minnesota, but from around the world has been nothing less than spectacular. For part of the war and again for several weeks during the ceasefire, I lived alone in an abandoned hotel. The staff had fled the war zone, leaving me with the keys. The arrangement seemed implausible, almost allegorical: a functioning hotel emptied of guests, of service, of purpose. I shared it only with two dogs and a scattering of other animals that occupied the vacuum left by people.
Its isolation altered the hierarchy of sounds. At night, there were the hyenas laughing somewhere beyond the property, the frogs that had claimed the swimming pool, and, above everything else, the constant hum of the low-flying, armed Israeli drone. Around these persistent noises came the intermittent concussions of bombardment, the artillery shelling in the hills of Mansouri as the Israeli army advanced, and the sharper punctuation of drone strikes. The silence was never silence.
The hotel acquired the atmosphere of a place that had outlived its own function. It felt less abandoned than suspended, as though waiting for an event that had already occurred. By day I left to work, always returning before dark because darkness belonged to other calculations. On some afternoons, the drones descended so low over the property that it seemed impossible not to imagine myself already incorporated into their field of vision. Surely the IDF knew I was there.
The solitude gradually became ordinary. Ordinary enough that I planned to deliver a scheduled lecture to students at a Dutch university from that improbable refuge. I had set up my computer and was preparing to begin when a forced displacement order arrived. The lecture never happened. I left within minutes, frantically trying to pack and communicate with the professor at the same time. I did not return for several weeks.
A few days before I fled, I had photographed the hotel. At the time, I thought I was recording its strange, spectral atmosphere. Looking at the images now, it’s clear that they documented something else as well: the peculiar stillness that war sometimes produces, when abandonment itself becomes another form of occupation.
