Ecuador at the World Cup: The Lanky One and the Beast

Ecuador has made significant strides on the international stage, as evidenced not only by the development of its center backs Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapié. Their entire generation has been shaped by the work of a single club.

Ecuador is one of the newer World Cup participants; the South American country, bisected by the equator, made its debut in 2002. But that doesn’t mean people there don’t dream—sometimes in grand ways. No one is as audacious as Michel Deller, who once studied architecture and is now a fabulously wealthy franchisee of multinational restaurant chains and shopping centers—and, above all, the owner and president for life of the soccer club Independiente del Valle. “He wants to lead Ecuador to the World Cup title, and he’s completely serious about it,” says Spanish soccer coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez, 41, who led Independiente del Valle to the Copa Sudamericana in 2019—the club’s first international title in its history of just over 50 years.
Although Ramírez left Ecuador long ago—most recently he was in Sweden with Malmö FF—he remains emotionally close to the team, which will now face Mexico on Tuesday (local time) in the World Cup round of 32 at the Azteca Stadium. That’s not surprising. When Ramírez pulls up the Ecuadorian lineup on his phone and uses the virtual pen to circle the players who played under him, there are reliably only two or three players left who made their mark without him: goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez, 39; center forward Enner Valencia, 36; and Hamburg-born attacking midfielder John Yeboah, 26.
The defense, however—along with midfielder Moisés Caicedo, 24, of Chelsea FC, the pride of the Ecuadorian team—was shaped by Ramírez. Leading the way are two familiar faces from the Bundesliga: former Frankfurt player Willian Pacho (Paris Saint-Germain) and former Leverkusen player Piero Hincapié (Arsenal), who faced off against each other in the Champions League final in Budapest at the end of May—a match PSG won with Pacho on the team. “For me, that also marks the turning point that Independiente del Valle represents in the history of soccer in Ecuador. It divides it into a before and after,” says Ramírez.
Originally, there were no plans for Ramírez—who, incidentally, attended the German School in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a child but claims to have “forgotten much of the language”—to take over the first team at Independiente. He had been working at the Aspire Academy in Qatar for years when, in 2018, he received a call from Roberto Olabe, now the sporting director of Premier League club Aston Villa. Olabe had also worked in Qatar from 2012 to 2016, where he had sought to establish structures for youth development and forged connections with clubs around the world, including Independiente del Valle.
Olabe became Independiente’s chief sports strategist in 2017 and quickly entrusted Ramírez with coordinating the youth development program. This encompassed not only the implementation of training methods but also—and especially—the professional development of the coaching staff. “Training, training preparation, team management—things like that,” explains Ramírez. The result? Half of the squad that is on the verge of matching Ecuador’s best-ever World Cup performance—reaching the round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup—consists of players from Independiente del Valle. “I don’t know if we’re looking at the most talented generation in Ecuadorian soccer. But I have no doubt that it’s the best-prepared generation,” says Ramírez.

What he found in Sangolquí, a city of 100,000 residents just outside Quito, was fascinating in two respects. On the one hand, “an abundance of physical and technical talent”; on the other, “the need to bring structure and development to that talent and raise the bar.” The long-term goal was certainly to prepare the players for transfer abroad—to recoup the investment. And to dispel the myth that Ecuadorian soccer players are incapable of adapting to other leagues and soccer cultures—let alone European ones.
To achieve this, Independiente del Valle invested heavily in infrastructure, and that wasn’t limited to just the massive training center. The school has been modernized, is equipped with the latest technology, and meets the standards typically found only at private institutions in the capital, Quito, Ramírez explains. In addition, psychologists, teachers, and coaches have been hired. Starting with the U12s and up, all coaches are full-time, and he considers this remarkable: “I don’t think there are many clubs worldwide that maintain such a staff. As far as I know, certainly not Real Madrid or FC Barcelona,” he says. And then there was also a network of scouts who find talent especially in Esmeraldas, Guayaquil, and Valle del Chota—not exclusively, but also among the descendants of the African-American population.
Ramírez found himself facing a generation of soccer players who possessed the best physical attributes: “a superb physique, outstanding muscular strength that they didn’t have to acquire in the gym first.” But they tended to be rather averse to sustained effort: “It took a great deal of effort for many players to repeat or maintain their effort when the ball was far away,” explains the coach. “They would just stop.” And so one of the major challenges was to develop new habits—even among young players who were considered prodigies. Take, for example, Hincapié, 24, who later played for Leverkusen and is now a professional at Arsenal.
Willian Pacho, 24, also ended up there in the summer of 2023. After a year-and-a-half stint with Belgian first-division club Royal Antwerp, Pacho moved to Eintracht Frankfurt. There, he caught the eye of Paris Saint-Germain scouts more than it did Kicker’s: The German soccer magazine hadn’t even ranked Pacho among the top 20 center backs of the 2023–24 season in its famous season rankings. PSG reportedly paid 40 million euros—not only more than double what Eintracht had paid Antwerp, but also a price above market value.
“When I arrived, Piero was on the U16 team. He was a very fast left back with good ball control, a good understanding of the game, strong tackling skills, and good heading ability.” However, Hincapié was prone to mistakes because he was so superior to his opponents “that he never needed to push himself to the limit and always knew he could make up for any mistakes.” The remedy Ramírez prescribed for him was to move him up to higher-level teams so he could play against older opponents, and to show him videos from training sessions and games. Hincapié learned—and he learned quickly and well—“because he’s alert, smart, quick-witted, and funny,” says Ramírez.
He understood Hincapié’s desire to be a center back; he only got upset once: when Hincapié, barely after making his first-team debut, came to Ramírez and told him he wanted to accept an offer from the Argentine first-division club Talleres de Córdoba to provide his family with a worry-free life. According to his GPS data—which showed better performance metrics than nearly all the other, older players—Hincapié was “a physical beast,” says Ramírez. The fear that Hincapié’s move might come too soon (“Stay another year; you still have a lot to learn,” Ramírez claims to have told Hincapié) faded over time. Hincapié made the leap to Europe, to the Bundesliga.

When Ramírez recalls the young Pacho, he sees a different player than Hincapié. “He was a very tall guy with incredibly long legs who used his hips to overpower strikers; it was often enough for him to wrap his legs around his opponent to steal the ball,” said Ramírez.
Pacho, on the other hand, had some work to do on his coordination: “Jumping for the ball was difficult for him because his body had grown too fast for his brain to coordinate the movements properly.” He also had an excessive sense of responsibility. “He tended to ‘overthink’ because he was more focused on the second or third action—or a possible mistake—rather than the task at hand.” At PSG, however, he certainly arrived “with the full toolbox”; he has long been considered one of the best center backs of today. And: He doesn’t forget. When he qualified for the Champions League final, he reserved a ticket for Ramírez.

¿Cómo hago para hablar contra el odio sin sentir odio mientras pienso y escribo?

Mírenlo corriendo hacia su familia tras el gol. Eso que ven es un ser humano celebrando lo que logró. Su trabajo dedicado a su esposa e hijos.

Y nosotros? sociedad patética, consumidos en el odio y la estupidez por perder un partido que no jugamos.

Lo insultaron a él y a los jugadores. Lo arruinaron con palabras cuando las cosas no salían como querían. Ayer era culpable de todo! Incluso apareció la más abominable bestia pidiendo "dos pepazos" para @EnnerValencia14! Qué enfermo burro miserable!

Así funciona el odio: destruye mientra puede, celebra cuando conviene, y nunca pide perdón por el daño hecho.

Cada uniforme tiene un nombre. Cada nombre tiene una historia. Cada historia tiene una familia que lo ama, que lo ve caer, que lo ve sufrir. Y nosotros, como sociedad, hemos decidido que eso no importa, a menos que ganen el partido.

El técnico corre a su familia hoy, pero ¿cuántas noches no durmió? ¿Cuántas veces leyó insultos, él, su esposa, sus hijos? Cuántas veces leyó las amenazas de muerte a sus jugadores? ¿Cuántas veces dudó de sí mismo?

El odio en el deporte es un espejo de la sociedad enferma que hemos construido. Una sociedad que consume vidas, que destruye dignidades, que vuelve a la gente cruel.

Necesitamos dejar de normalizar el odio como pasión. Necesitamos recordar que la crítica y el respeto pueden convivir. Que se puede exigir más sin denigrar. Que cada persona merece dignidad, incluso cuando pierde.
