I've been working on a long article about British elites and the role classics played in their education.
I am an edu-trad and believe in the best that has been known & thought.
But you can have too much of a good thing, and in the 19th C I think Britain overdosed on Classics!
EG, in 1900, a donor offered to found a school of naval architecture at Cambridge University, but withdrew the offer when the university insisted the students would all have to qualify in Greek.
Boris is a hangover from that era, when elegant translations of the Melian dialogue were seen as the best preparation for anything life would throw at you.
In lockdown I think some leaked WhatsApps showed him struggling with basic percentages.
It's a throwback to big educational debates in the early 20th C, when reformers wanted more maths and science on the curriculum, and the trad public schools wanted to stick with Greek & Latin.
The days of GCSE pupils memorising equations and formulae from memory are now officially over.
Schools minister Georgia Gould has written to Ofqual to say that "for the lifetime of the current GCSE specifications in these subjects, students should not be required to memorise formulae and equations for assessment purposes."
Dumbing down or common sense?
Circle Theorems Worksheet now uploaded. Let me know how the students find it!

We tried something related for A-level maths. Results as follows.
* Standards declined between 1968 and 1996. The quality of work that would have produced an E in 1968 would have got a B in 1996.
* Standards did not change much between 1996 and 2012.

So, have we seen the huge exodus of students out of private schools and mass closures? Have we seen a huge influx into state schools? I have always argued this wouldn’t happen and have largely agreed with the VAT policy but was told it would be Armageddon for the sector. My gut told me ppl would pay more in fees despite saying they couldn’t or wouldn’t.
one problem with exploring fractional powers is that you can stick it into a calculator without a good assessment of what is happening, but any non-calculator work restricts itself to such a thin domain of numbers that it's hard to ask meaningful Qs
so i made some power charts
