i adore this scene, because it sets up so much of mike & el's dynamic in such little time.

when mike comes in, he does so with a defined plan & very clear orders, but as soon as el starts pushing back... he halts.

in no time, he senses what she's feeling, even as she gives very little away.

rather than dismissing her and continuing to advocate for his plan, he takes her concerns at face value, and wastes no time disputing them.

instead, he softens his voice, and uses questions to create a space where el can communicate her needs, one answer at a time.

every word she says, mike extends into a full sentence, helping her flesh out her thoughts and making sure he's understanding her correctly.

in under a minute, and after very few words shared, he entirely abandons his previous plan, and let's her be the one to set the terms instead.

this is just one of many s1 scenes in which we see mike actively inquire about el's wants and needs, rather than blindly assuming he knows what's best for her.

it's little moments like these that make it abundantly clear why mike goes on to become el's safe space.
