Like, holy shit. Every time I look behind the cute anime avatar, there seems to be another layer of absolute degeneracy.

And no, I'm not saying every single VTuber is some secret fascist racist psychopath. Obviously there are normal people in the scene. But I've personally met enough of them to notice a pattern: extreme politics, racism, weird parasocial shit, manufactured personalities, and an audience willing to defend basically anything because their favorite streamer has a cute anime model.

At some point the avatar stops being a character and starts being a fucking disguise.

That's why I genuinely appreciate people like Philian. She's actually entertaining without needing to constantly manufacture some parasocial fantasy around herself. You can watch her because she's funny and entertaining, not because you're being sold the digital equivalent of "notice me, senpai" every five minutes.

And honestly?

VTubing sometimes feels like OnlyFans™ Lite.

Same monetization of attention. Same parasocial relationship bait. Same people throwing money at someone they've never met. Just replace the webcam with a Live2D model and suddenly everybody pretends it's a completely different phenomenon.

Again, there are good VTubers. There are talented VTubers. There are genuinely wholesome VTubers.

But holy fucking shit, the industry has produced enough absolute freaks that I don't blame anyone for looking at the whole thing and going:
"Yeah, I'm good."

Let me be specific about what I am objecting to, because a lot of people are answering something I did not say.

I do not care that it is a cat girl. I do not care that it is a drawing. I do not care that it is fiction. Fiction gets to go to dark places, that is part of what fiction is for, and I am not asking anyone to stop drawing anything.

What I am objecting to is one sentence. "Why doesn't the landlord just rape them." That is not fiction exploring something, it is a rape line delivered as a punchline, with a sexualised image attached to make it land. The joke is not about the setting. The joke is the rape.

And I think the reason it got the numbers it did is precisely that it is a cat girl. Swap the drawing for a person and nobody retweets it. The costume is doing the work of making a rape joke go down easy, which is exactly why it is worth pointing at.

Nobody in these replies has actually said the post was fine. What I am getting instead is that objecting to it makes me a certain kind of person, or a certain politics, or too serious. That is not a defence of the post. That is changing the subject to me, because defending the post itself is harder.

So to keep it simple. Say what you want, draw what you want, I am not asking for anything to be taken down. I am just going to say out loud that "just rape them" as a joke is grim, and that 12,000 people liking it does not make it less grim. If that is moralfagging then fine, I will take it.
