Some drivers don’t even own the car. They pay huge weekly remittances to fleet companies, and if they miss a target, they either pay fines or lose the car. Combine that with borrowing from loan sharks, and suddenly the “flexible gig” looks like a life trapped in debt.

And it’s not just financial. There’s insecurity on the road robbery, violent passengers, and unsafe neighborhoods. Then, out of nowhere, apps can suspend accounts with no explanation, no hearing, no mercy.

Drivers are called partners, but many feel like replaceable tools slaves, even third-class citizens in their own country, doing all the work while someone else profits.

Yet, despite the hardships, they keep showing up. Why? Because unemployment is high, and driving is one of the few ways to survive.

And through it all, they hold onto one truth:

There is dignity in labour.

Driving may not make you rich. It may not make you comfortable. But it is honest work, and every driver deserves respect, fairness, and a chance at a better life.

So next time you get a ride, remember the battles behind that steering wheel financial, physical, and emotional. These are humans giving their all so we can get from point A to B.

Tip when you can. Respect their work. Because the reality of the road is harsher than the app makes it look.
