Cowden syndrome is a genetic disease. It is caused by mutations in the PTEN gene.
The classic triad of Cowden syndrome includes:
Multiple Facial Papules: Small, wart-like bumps that form around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Oral Papillomatosis: Small, bump-like growths inside the mouth that give the tongue and gums a cobblestone texture.
Acral Keratoses: Thick, rough bumps or sores that appear on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
Glycogenic acanthosis is a harmless condition. It causes small, raised white bumps in the esophagus (food pipe). These bumps form when lining cells grow too thick (hyperplasia) and store excess sugar/energy (glycogen).
Cause: Unknown, but it becomes more common with age. It is sometimes linked to acid reflux (GERD).
Rare Warning: Finding many of these bumps can rarely signal a genetic condition called Cowden syndrome, which doctors might check for if the bumps are extreme.
