Digital Dentures are officially in my opinion better than analog dentures! Did that get your attention? In 2019, my laboratory made some serious investments in trying to create Complete Digital Dentures. We started with what we knew, which was milling. The discs and milling strategies available at the time left us with dentures that weren’t completely milled. The initial designs were difficult to create, and they required a lot of adjusting by hand once they came out of the mill. We would tie up a mil for four hours just to create a Denture that required another hour worth of handwork. In 2020 we made some additional investments in 3-D printing, and we invested in polyjet technology from Stratasys. We were simply blown away at the ease and accuracy of the print jobs but at the time they were no serious by compatible materials that mimic nature. As a result were able to make awesome models in great surgical guides, but no prosthetics that could be put in the mouth. Emerging out of the Covid years, we saw an increase in our full arch implant bridge volume and we saw a huge need for printed prototypes. Also, we started to see a lot of growth in our denture department, and so we were desperate for a solution to help us scale. In 2021 we made a heavy investment in our Carbon M2 Printers, as well as the Lucitone Digital Print solution (LDP). It proved to be a very durable material, and the aesthetics were much better than other printed denture solutions. We were very excited, but quickly found out the handling of the resin was fairly technique sensitive, the post processing was extremely technique sensitive, and required a significant amount of labor to achieve mediocre aesthetics. Also, the nesting of the dentures were very technique sensitive and would result in distortions and warping if not nested properly and we would see white spots all over the final product if not handled correctly. Also, we were never able to print our implant bridge prototypes nor acrylic partials with any consistency. The difference between the aesthetics of a traditional denture and the LDP denture very were noticeable to our dentists and most preferred a traditional denture over the LDP denture, though the LDP denture did provide a much simpler record taking protocol. At the time we made the decision to print all of our denture prototypes and digital complete dentures on the Carbon M2 Printers using the LDP solution and printed all of our precision parts like implant models and surgical guides on the Stratasys J5 printers. In 2022 we became aware of the new biocompatible colored resins that Stratasys would be introducing in 2023 and the available .3MF CAM files offered through 3shape. We thought that this would be truly revolutionary and once again in 2023 we made another heavy investment in digital dentures by purchasing a third Stratasys J5 DentaJet Printer dedicated to only printing dentures. In 2023 we were absolutely astonished by the True Dent Digital Denture Solution. The anatomy of our digital designs were maintained, the internal morphology and translucency of the teeth were very realistic, the precision and exactness of the fits with out having to make manual adjustments were something we had yet to experience. The color of the gingiva and the vein and fiber effects all just simply made our jaws drop. We truly had produced a polychromatic, monolithic denture! Not only can we now 3D print a truly aesthetic and life-like denture, but we can now produce up to 40 dentures all with various denture tooth shades and denture base shades in one print job. The True Dent Dentures simply look exactly like our digital designs, fit amazingly, and require no special handling nor extra hand work. We can also print indications that were previously difficult or near impossible to produce like partial acrylic dentures, and Implant bridge prototypes while also allowing us to maintain our original contours without having to over contour our prosthetics with pink veneering materials. We are now able to achieve desired results with ease. This predictability and reliability of True Dent has allowed us to really take on digital dentures with 100% confidence in our product. Whatever we design on any given day will be printed and ready for delivery the following day with minimum post processing effort. One of our biggest complaints with doing a two piece denture is that there is a change in the fit due to the printing process and a change in vertical introduced in the manual bonding process of the teeth. Also the design is modified in two piece dentures to create sockets for the denture and connectors are added between the denture teeth. These modifications always result in a distortion of the original digital design and a change in fit from try in to final. To illustrate the change in fit and aesthetics with LDP from our original designs, I created two dentures using one single denture case design; one set was manufactured using the LDP workflow and the other using the True Dent workflow. I then took photos to illustrate the change in aesthetics from my original design and to compare the difference between the two. I then scanned in the produced dentures to compare them to the original digital design. To ensure that this was done blindly I gave my staff the instructions to design an upper and lower complete denture on a single model I provided and told them to print one denture set using LDP and the other using True Dent. The results are telling and reaffirm the complaint and concerns of our dentists and technicians with two piece dentures.
