Sedimentologist, urban geology and radar interferometry. Working @GSBelgium @RBINSmuseum and teaching sedimentology/micropal @ULB. Views and opinions are my own
For those interested or for the young students and secondary schools interested by the thematic of urban areas affected by climate change and geology (under the city)
📢 EGS Urban Geology Experts Group filmed a captivating 30-minute documentary: Cities Under Pressure. We’re excited to premiere it - free event on December 4, 2024 in Brussels at the beautiful RBINS theatre. 150 seats available -> register! Trailer:https://t.co/2mrP4G68AW
Summer-style heat is piling into Europe right now. Unprecedented for this early in April.
Watch how Storm Kathleen acts like a giant engine that scoops the heat out of Africa and pushes it across Europe. Many records are about to fall...

#GSB125GeoFacts Columnar jointing: these structures seem man-made, but they actually occur naturally. When lava cools, it shrinks and starts cracking in hexagonal (or similar) shapes. These cracks will tend to propagate down the lava forming long columns.
#GSB125GeoFacts The materials used to construct our old buildings often came from local or regional quarries because it was difficult to transport stones over long distances before mechanization. Example: limestone/marble blocks used as bricks in houses around Rochefort.
#GSB125GeoFacts Did you know that there is an island called Christmas? Named on this day in 1643, this volcanic island is mostly famous for its extensive phosphate deposits, used as fertiliser. These deposits derive from ancient guano - a.k.a. bird poo! Merry Christmas 🎄🏝
#GSB125GeoFacts Igneous rocks are formed when magma or lava cools and solidifies. Intrusive igneous rocks are formed inside of the Earth and cool very slowly. Extrusive igneous rocks are formed on the Earth's surface and cool very rapidly (like in a volcanic eruption).
#GSB125GeoFacts 2021 felt like a long year for us, but it is just a tiny fraction of Earth's age. If we shrink the geological time scale to fit one hour, modern humans only appear in the last second. Happy New Year from the GSB! 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣2️⃣🎉
#GSB125GeoFacts Ever wonder how sand ends up on the beach? First, the weathering process breaks down or dissolves exposed rocks on land. Then the erosion process transports the pieces of rock away by wind, water or ice. With time, the pieces become smaller and reach the beach.
Happy birthday to the Geological Survey of Belgium (@GSBelgium)! 125 yrs old on this day, and since 2002 part of @RBINSmuseum. The original purpose, to make a geological map of the subsurface, has been greatly expanded over the years! Congrats to our #geologists and staff #gsb125
Starting today, one fun fact about geology for each year of the #GSBelgium, a photo contest to showcase the geo-beauty of Belgium, an anniversary event and much more!
