A solar storm 14,000 years ago hit Earth harder than anything since.

Around 12,350 BC, Earth was struck by a solar superstorm so ferocious that it dwarfs every recorded event in human history. It was roughly 500 times more powerful than the 2003 Halloween storms and significantly stronger than the 1859 Carrington Event, long considered the benchmark for extreme space weather.

The evidence lay hidden in tree rings.

In 2023, researchers detected an enormous spike in radiocarbon (carbon-14) locked inside ancient wood. These isotopes form when cosmic rays and solar particles collide with Earth’s atmosphere, but the signal was so extreme that standard models—built for our warmer modern climate—couldn’t explain it. A team from the University of Oulu in Finland applied a sophisticated chemistry-climate model adjusted for Ice Age conditions and confirmed the culprit: a solar proton storm of unprecedented magnitude, the largest in at least the past 12,000 years.

The onslaught occurred sometime between January and April 12,350 BC, very likely painting brilliant auroras across the skies of Ice Age Europe for the people hunting mammoths beneath them.

This ancient catastrophe is more than a curiosity; it is a sobering wake-up call. A similar event today would cripple satellites, trigger widespread blackouts, and disrupt global communications for months or longer. Even moderate storms have already pushed satellites off course, scrambled GPS, and forced airlines to reroute polar flights because of radiation risks.

The discovery dramatically raises the bar for our worst-case space-weather scenario. As humanity grows ever more reliant on orbiting infrastructure, recognizing just how violent the Sun can become is no longer optional—it’s urgent.

marked Kishore Kumar's debut as a full-fledged music director for his own home production.
The song was originally recorded 25 years earlier by his elder brother, Ashok Kumar, in his debut movie Jeevan Naiya (1936), which was composed by Saraswati Devi, India's first female film music composer, with lyrics by Jamuna Swarup Kashyap.
Kishore Kumar was only about five or six years old when Dadamoni sang it on screen. Young Kishore fell completely in love with the tune and practiced it relentlessly.
When a young Kishore first told his brother that he wanted to sing the song himself one day, Ashok Kumar laughed it off because Kishore's childhood voice was unpolished and the song's meter was quite intricate.
Before recreating his brother's childhood favorite tune, Kishore formally asked Ashok Kumar for permission to use it.
Kishore kept the soul-stirring core of the original composition while adding his own haunting, emotional delivery, turning it into an all-time classic. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the additional lyrical adaptations for the Jhumroo version.

My most favourite song of Kishore Kumar. It was for the first time I was exposed to a Kishore Kumar song and from then on it was only and only Kishore Kumar for me.
The God of singing.
His singing goes straight to the soul.

Kishore besides acting also directed the movie and composed music for the movie.
This track serves as a massive milestone for Sulakshana Pandit. Before becoming a famous actress-singer, she used to sing in Kishore Kumar's live stage shows. He gave her a major break by choosing her to sing this duet alongside him.
