Phil saw his shadow, and with that, I added the final pixel to "45 squared: Groundhog Day" – now minted fully onchain via Efficax. ⬛️

A perfect-square year 2025 = 45² ~> a 45×45 pixel canvas ~> history as generative art:

Each pixel represents a year from 1 to 2025, with cold, shadowy colors for years in which the groundhog indicated six more weeks of winter, and warmer ones for years in which he predicted an early spring.

The bold colors at the bottom represent years in which Groundhog Day was officially recorded (starting in 1886*). But of course, the land area of Punxsutawney, PA existed long before that** – and the lighter tones extrapolate the pattern backwards through time, showing us what the groundhog might have seen, had anyone been watching back then.

Perhaps fittingly since the groundhog sees more winter coming far more often than spring, these data points all aggregate into an abstract winter scene. ❄️

(And of course, there's something hidden in shadow.)

As with "45 squared: New Year," there are 45 editions. I'll be gifting a few of them to a second set of people who directly contributed to my ability to pursue this project. I'll also hold 5 for myself.

The remaining ~35 will be available at the thematic price of .04545 ETH. Please DM if you're interested in potentially acquiring one. (Some preference will be given to collectors of "New Year," to enable them to collect full sets should they wish.)

A month ago, I created "45 squared: New Year" – recognizing that this perfect-square year could give rise to a perfectly square 45×45 pixel canvas.

For Groundhog Day tomorrow, I take this idea further: I treat history as a generative seed for that canvas, coloring pixels according to whether the groundhog did or did not see his shadow in a given year, and extrapolating backwards through time.

The work is almost done, but there's one pixel yet to "Phil" in: will he see his shadow tomorrow, locking in winter – or will he not, predicting an early spring?
