One reason why UK universities are in such a dire state is because they're increasingly being captured by management consultants. This article explains why this is happening:

Are you a prospective student for @uniofyork? It is important that you know the uni has no plan for how to operate after hundreds of staff leave due to voluntary severance midway through semester one... https://t.co/cFLSSsVn46 @ucu#ReclaimHigherEd
Dear @ucu,
Is there a UK wide plan to protect our contracts? Custom and practice is 40/40/20 (T&R) and 60/20/20 (T&S). Some universities are going for 20% for research, or worse 10%. This destroys careers.
@FloraRenz But yet no word from @UoK_UCU on the matter. Their last post here was in August 2023. So nothing to say about the closure of subjects at Kent earlier this year or yet another VS scheme to cut the academic staff base . Anyone might think they’ve struck up a deal with management…

The British Academy has today published its manifesto, calling on the next government to urgently bolster the humanities and social sciences in higher education and research to fully address the UK's biggest challenges. Read the full manifesto below:

Keele has joined the long list of universities seeking cuts to staff. Of course they state this will have ‘no impact’ on student experience. What students don’t love having fewer, more overworked and stressed out staff? https://t.co/HCz6wYwicc

Portsmouth is choosing to prioritise new buildings over the staff that support students.
Now that staff have overwhelmingly voted no confidence in the vice-chancellor, the university must take stock & halt the cuts.

Nearly 300 staff face the sack at London South Bank University
These cuts would leave the institution a shell of its former self and totally hollow out the university's capacity to teach and support students

During the statutory consultation period, we received many letters of support, arguing compellingly that there is an important role for philosophy in a university. Many more signed a petition against the redundancies. We are immensely grateful to all our supporters.
@UniKent has gone ahead with its plans to slash the humanities and social sciences, and the Philosophy Department will be axed in July. Our department has achieved a huge amount in its 59 years. We'll mark the occasion on 14 June - all welcome! https://t.co/ybLcj5fBbG
