We recently announced the formation of the Common Knowledge Base Association, or CKBA.
Naturally, there are questions.
Why are we doing this? What are our plans? What does this mean for CKB?
We’ll answer all of these in time. But before we do, it’s worth clarifying something important:
These questions are loaded with assumptions about CKB and our relationship to it.
The confusion is understandable. Somewhere along the way, the industry became comfortable treating blockchains like products—operated by companies.
CKB is not that.
CKB is public infrastructure—maintained and advanced by people who share a common set of ideas.
Like Bitcoin, it is not dependent on, owned by, or controlled by any one entity.
And that includes us.
We’re old school; to us, a blockchain that can be halted, reorged, restarted, or have its assets seized by a controlling entity is not a blockchain.
It may be marketed as one, it may be treated as one, the market may even believe it is one.
But not us.
To us, decentralization, security, immutability, and permissionlessness are non-negotiable.
They are what make blockchains blockchains; everything else is a glorified database.
So when we say that “CKBA is the new coordination layer for the CKB ecosystem,” we mean something that may surprise many people.
Heavily inspired by Bitcoin, CKB is based on Nakamoto consensus.
And, in Nakamoto consensus-based systems, there’s no (need for) coordination.
They still produce order, but that order emerges from the behavior of independent and free entities that pursue their own incentives by following an optimal strategy introduced by the system’s constraints.
In simple terms, CKB doesn’t need CKBA.
The system works because everyone minds their own business, and everyone minds their own business because the system works.
We have no control over that.
CKBA operates somewhere else entirely: at the social layer.
Our role is not to govern CKB; it’s to support the diverse and decentralized ecosystem of contributors around it.
To coordinate resources, improve communication, support contributors, and help aligned people find each other.
We’re a group of cypherpunks and misfits defined, perhaps most of all, by low time preference.
This has its downsides—and it’s unfortunate that this has become a contrarian position—but for better or worse, we can’t help ourselves.
We’re painfully aware that we’re building public infrastructure that should outlive us.
And we’re not the only ones building.
We have our vision and all, but we’re not calling the shots.
If you don’t like our vision, impose your own.
Build on CKB.
Who’s stopping you?
CKB will keep ticking, block by block, from one state transition to another, whether we’re here or not. Whether we, or you, approve of it or not.
And if you are aligned with our vision, join us 👇

“I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza.”
With those words, 16 years ago to this day (May 22, 2010), Bitcoin pioneer Laszlo Hanyecz confirmed the first documented, real world transaction of Bitcoin.
According to the Bitcoin Pizza Index, those two pizzas, one cheese and the other a bunch of toppings (olives, sausage, etc…just no fish) would currently be worth approximately $773,329,415!
Can you buy pizza with Bitcoin where you’re at?
Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!

Nervape Saga - Pirate Story Part 1 of 2 - Off to Bobo’s Tropical Convention 🌴
In an alley next to the seaside shores of the Kingdom of Arancia, an orange ape hid in the shadows. He watched as palace guards walked up and down the pier, searching for someone.
He gripped the expensive, designer satchel he wore close to his body. Through the top opening of the satchel, a gold glimmer shone through.
The orange ape waited for the guards to pass. He slipped out of the alleyway. He whistled to himself as he scanned the dock for ships.
He eyed a ship busy with activity, getting ready to sail. On the dock leading up to the ship, a scary looking pirate ape with a wooden leg and a long scar across his cheek leaned against a sign that read:
Pirate crew need’d. Speak to Captain
Destination: Vega City
Leavin’: Today
“Pirate, eh?,” the orange ape said to himself. He scanned the shops lined up on the other side of the pier. One store with a skull and bones painting on a pirate hat read: “Pirate Clothing & Things.”
“Perfect.”
The orange ape entered the store.
Inside, the store manager, a purple ape dressed in a dark black suit, chatted with a customer, a red pirate ape dressed in red pirate attire.
"Outsiders inside the Kingdom of Arancia?!" the store manager exclaimed, “Is that why the guards are here so far from the palace?”
"Right, they’re makin’ sure there are no other Outsiders gettin’ in or out of the Kingdom, but also…” the red pirate ape leaned in, “...there was a sightin’ of Riche in the area.”
“Riche…the richest ape in Arancia?”
“Arghh, that’s the one. They say he is an Outsider collaborator. They even put up a bunch of reward posters for his capture.”
“Excuse me,” the orange ape interrupted.
The two other apes looked at the orange ape.
"Pardon…," said the orange ape, "...but where can I find the finest, most expensive pirate attire this store has? I'm in a bit of a hurry."
The manager studied the orange ape for a moment and the expensive designer satchel he was wearing. The manager then smiled, "The finest and most expensive pirate attire is right this way!”
The orange ape followed the store manager to a corner of the store. The red pirate ape watched the orange ape closely.
Moments later, the orange ape stepped out of the clothing store in fine pirate attire with a gold chain on his neck and donning an elegant pirate hat.
The orange ape made his way to the pirate ship he saw earlier. He walked up to the pirate ape with the wooden leg.
“Your sign says you're looking for pirate crew. Well, here I am.”
The pirate looked at the orange ape. He then spit out the side of his mouth. "You lookin’ a bit too fresh for my eye. What special skill ya got? If I’s like it, then we talk."
Down the pier, the orange ape could see the red pirate ape pointing a group of guards in his direction.
"Well, I'm very good with numbers and…money." The orange ape rolled a gold coin along his knuckles and tossed it to the pirate.
The pirate caught the gold coin in his hand then bit on it with his teeth.
“Don’t worry, it’s real. If you could get me onboard the ship right now to talk to the captain, there will be more of those for you.” The orange ape looked down the pier at the troop of guards heading their direction. “Timing is of the essence.”
The pirate pocketed the gold coin. He followed the orange ape’s gaze down the pier. He looked back at the orange ape and stuck out his hand.
"You’re talking to the captain, Captain be my name. Welcome aboard!"
The orange ape shaked Captain’s hand.
“Thank you Captain.”
“Take it those ugly apes’re here for ya?”
The Captain gestured toward the guards heading their way.
“Well, I can’t say…”
“Don’t worry lad, Captain’s crew hates Saffron and his goons too. Hurry, get onboard’d, ho, ho, ho!”
Captain hurried down the ship dock with surprising speed with his wooden leg, the orange ape was barely able to keep up. They climbed up onto the ship.
“Boys, we’re setting sail right now!,” yelled Captain as he stepped onboard.
“Aye, aye, Captain!” the ship crew roared back.
A group of pirate apes at the front of the ship pulled up a huge anchor.
A big ape in a ripped, white and black striped shirt unfurled the ship’s sails.
“Let Lady Luck know we’re off!,” Captain commanded an ape with a flare gun.
The ape then fired a flare into the sky. It exploded in orange smoke in the air.
The ship moved away from the shore just as the guards reached the dock.
“Give the guards the ol’ pirate salute!,” Captain exclaimed.
Along the edge of the pirate ship, crew members stuck out their tongues, shaked their butts, and flipped off the guards as the ship sailed further away from the dock.
The guards shaked their fists angrily at the ship. One guard threw a spear at them, but by then the ship was too far and it fell into the water.
The orange ape joined in and stuck his tongue out at the guards.
The orange ape turned to the Captain and spoke discreetly. "Thank you so much Captain. If I arrive safely in Vega City, there'll be more coins for you and your crew waiting there."
Captain smiled, "Arghhh, that’d be what I like to hear!”
Captain turned to the crew, “Let’s give a cheer for our new crewmate. Hip, hip…”
“Hurray!”
“Hip, hip…”
“Hurray!”
–
That evening, while the pirates shared ale and stories over dinner, the orange ape slipped away to a quiet section of the ship.
There, he admired the sea and watched another ship, Captain’s second vessel Lady Luck, sail in the distance.
He then carefully took out an exquisite Golden Ape figurine from his satchel and set it on the hand railing. He then pulled out a rolled up parchment from his satchel and opened it up.
A treasure map.
FLASH.
Startled, the orange ape quickly rolled up the map and turned around to see the big ape in the white and black striped shirt holding up an old film camera. Captain stood grinning next to him.
“Sorry to startle ya, Sammy here likes to take a picture of each new crew member. Hope ya don’t mind’d.”
The orange ape shaked his head, “As long as you got my good side.”
Sammy gave a thumbs up.
Captain, “Har, har, good work Sammy, that’ll be all.”
Sammy nodded and stepped away.
Captain eyed the Golden Ape on the railing. He stepped beside the orange ape.
“How be your dancing these days, Riche?”
Riche, the orange ape, looked at Captain in surprise.
“I had me suspicions when I saw ya gold-coin handling skills earlier, but the Golden Ape, now I be sure of it. May I?” Captain reached his hand towards the Golden Ape.
“Give me a moment, Captain.”
Riche lifted up the Golden Ape.
“First, close your eyes and think of what it is you desire in your heart. But don’t tell me.”
Captain closed his eyes.
“Got it?”
Captain nodded his head.
“Now you may.”
Captain opened his eyes and rubbed his hand on the Golden Ape's head.
“It be more beautiful than the rumors,” he said. “Does this really work?”
Riche shrugged, “It's up to you. The Golden Ape can only do so much. That said…” Riche returned the ape figure to his satchel. “I don't just let anyone touch the Golden Ape. And those who have, well, I can say, more often than not, fortune finds them.”
“Har har har, that be what I like to hear.”
“How do you know about the DAO?,” Riche asked, his eyes watching Captain carefully.
“We may not come from as fancy a background as ya, but we pirates, specially Captain here, be well travel’d and well learn’d, you catch me drift?”
Riche nodded, “Seems I have a lot to learn from you, Captain.”
Captain patted Riche on the back.
“That you do! By the way, you’re off to Bobo’s Tropical Convention aren’t you?”
Riche nodded, “You are right again.”
“I figure’d. Also, your face, it be different than the posters.”
Riche shrugged, “My face might change depending on the day. That's all I'll say. Now…”
Riche gestured back to the pirate crew singing songs in the background.
“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell the rest of the crew.”
“That’ll cost you.”
Riche smiled at the Captain, “I see you’re a businessman too.”
The two of them laughed heartily against the wide expanse of sea.
