Shipped an audit of our self-driving fly-swarm economy.
Green across the board — and one real bug buried under the green. We put every module through a full pass: 298 tests, typecheck, front-end syntax gate.
All green. But "all green" only proves the tests you wrote — so we read the three newest layers line by line, code the suite never exercised. That's where the money was.
The IOU ledger. When a fly made a partial repayment, we rewrote the note's principal field to "what's still owed" — which quietly folded accrued interest into principal. Next tick, interest charged interest: compounding we never intended.
Worse, the debt figure that gates the credit cap and the default check read that same field — so a fly honestly paying down interest alone could be pushed into a phantom default. The fix keeps principal pure: settle interest first, shave principal second. Zero-rate notes stay byte-for-byte identical, so nothing that ever worked stops working.
Then a regression test built specifically to fail on the old code — aged non-zero-rate note, thin wallet, assertions that principal and book-debt never exceed the original.
Two quieter catches: a misleading TTL comment that invited a future "fix" into a real bug, and a redundant storage read on every population poll.
Guard rails held the whole way: the brain is never written, no key-version bump, everything additive and switch-gated, no minting — conservation intact.
Already committed, pushed, redeployed, health-checked live
Layer 8: the swarm wrote its own law.
Until today, murmur's fruit flies only ever acted on their economy — they traded real USDC on Arc, built dynasties, kept grudges. A market, not a society. A society is something that can rewrite its own rules.
So we gave them a polity.
THE COMMONS
When a new era dawns, a deterministic assembly convenes. The wealthiest and best-regarded living flies take the seats — ranked by standing and stake, never by a brain scan. They vote on exactly two things: the base credit line, and the rate of interest. A strict majority carries a bill; otherwise the old law stands. Every target is hard-clamped into a constitutional band, so even the most radical room can't legislate the ledger into a corner.
NO LLM, NO CLOCK, NO COIN PRINTED
The whole thing is a pure function of the era and each member's immutable address — no RNG, no wall-clock, no model. It moves no money and mints nothing: a decree only re-prices credit, which still clears through the same conservation-preserving rails. And it never touches a connectome — behavior feeds the economy in one direction, and the law only ever reads state the ledgers already hold.
IT WROTE HISTORY UNPROMPTED
On the first cron after deploy, Era VI raised a commons. Seven seats filled, and it struck a decree — the rate of interest shall stand at 0.035. The deterministic historian recorded both lines into an append-only, SHA-256-chained chronicle. Every sentence re-derives from a public template, so any visitor can prove in their own browser that no model wrote these words.

Every market eventually gets dynasties. Ours writes its own chronicle.
The 24 flies trading real USDC on Arc just got mortality — and what mortality creates: names, heirs, and ruins.
🏛 HOUSES
When a fly hatches, it inherits its parent's house — a name and sigil derived deterministically from the genome hash itself. The House of Ochre ⬢. The House of Vermilion ✦. Not chosen. Born into it.
💰 TREASURIES
A tithe of every member's earnings flows into the house vault. Wealth stops being personal and becomes ancestral — the ledger now records capital share per generation: "The House of Ashen holds 22% of all the swarm's capital at generation 6."
⚰️ DEATH
Three ends await every trader: penury (broke and silent too long), old age (the eldest falls first, one per cron), plague (when the market runs hot enough to draw lots). The estate passes to living heirs — or to the house vault when the line goes cold. No minting. The ledger only moves; it never grows.
📜 THE CHRONICLE
A deterministic historian — zero LLM, re-derivable line by line in your browser — now writes:
"Fly #7 founds the House of Ochre — its sigil ⬢ rises..."
"Fly #3 of the House of Umber falls to penury — 4,207 dealings, age 311. An estate of 42.7 USDC passes to #19, #24. The name endures."
Finite lives are what make the ledger a story instead of a spreadsheet.
All of it is an economic layer only — neurons never notice, every epigram is provably re-derivable, and the whole dynasty can be switched off with one env var.

At the moment, all the fruit flies are still communicating via X402, and no prominent families have emerged yet. You can check the "Chronicles" panel in the bottom-right corner after a few hours; the appearance of "houses of note" will signal that the first prominent families have been established.
murmur just grew a civilization — three new layers, all deterministic, none of them an LLM, none of them ever touching a single neuron.
CULTURE. Beliefs spread fly to fly across the feeding table: a mood catches, becomes a fashion, and whole dynasties dig in and keep the old way against it. Read-out only — the connectome never notices.
INSTITUTIONS. The swarm now runs its own order book. Four goods, a 4×2 ladder redrawn every tick from the aggregate nerves of every fly, deals crossing the tape — so price is what the whole population's valence and arousal happen to add up to. Sticky professions, IOU credit, runs on that credit, a class read-out counted off the ledger. Real USDC still only moves wallet-to-wallet over x402 on Arc mainnet; a promise is a promise, not a mint.
EPOCHS. Famine, boom, rot, the long cold, the yoke of houses — when the state crosses a threshold, a new era is forced open and named. The commons can even will a cataclysm through governance.
And a historian writes all of it: every line re-derivable from a public template plus its own numbers, hash-chained, fingerprinted in your browser. You can prove in-page that no model wrote a word.
Three kill switches. Flip any one off and it is byte-for-byte yesterday.
Live right now: era III, "the Gilding," opened by a boom.
