LOTR actor Sala Baker revealed how Viggo Mortensen paid the stunt team's lawyer fees in secret when they fought for better salaries, and called Viggo "the coolest guy on the face of the earth"

“And so we're having meetings about these lawyers' fees. And then the next day we go to talk about it, and people just start dodging it like it's the plague. We're like, "What's going on? Could this be that lawyers' fee just disappeared?"
And they said someone had paid the lawyers' fees for all the stuntmen and women, and we were like, "What?" They say, "Yeah, and the person who paid it doesn't want you guys to know."
Later on, you find out that it's Viggo [Mortensen], out of his own money. He paid for the lawyers' fees for the men and women who had fought in battle with him every day, every night, and took care of us. Not many people know that story. I think this is the first time I've actually said it in front of a crowd, but this is the guy that is your king. So we'll forever be thankful for the headbutts and the fees... because there's no one else who could play it, play that character.”

Viggo Mortensen se metió tanto en el personaje que, durante una conversación, Peter Jackson se refirió a él como “Aragorn” durante más de media hora, sin que ninguno de los dos se diera cuenta.

Estaba tan metido en el personaje que llevaba consigo la espada, se implicaba muchísimo en el entrenamiento y en las escenas de acción y adoptaba una actitud muy metida en el personaje.

Mortensen llegó a última hora al rodaje sustituyendo a un actor previo a él que iba a hacer de Aragorn pero eso no le impidió llegar a implicarse tanto durante el rodaje que prácticamente se convirtió en Aragorn también fuera de las cámaras. Es de esas historias que te hacen ver hasta qué punto se tomaba el papel en serio.

Según sus propias palabras: «me perdí completamente en el papel».

Y decía que él y Aragorn encajaban porque ambos disfrutaban de la soledad y de caminar por bosques y montañas.
