After collecting her fundraising pebble this evening, someone wanted to read one of her newest books - The Little Liger.

Lots of food for thought in tonight’s chat - hoping people can catch up later and give input into the discussion. This remains an important issue and something we need to address before we see distressing reflections in data further down the line. #BAMEMaternity
Can we also acknowledge some cultures may have specific customs they like to carry out during labour or at birth and how, if these aren’t possible due to Covid, are we handling this from a Comms perspective? #BAMEMaternity
I feel like this is an area that really needs work and improvement - and that’s recognised, but we need to take whatever action we can to address the issue as well as acknowledging it. It’s not enough to acknowledge we have inequalities. We now need to work on them #BAMEMaternity
Resources are important though to allow teams to do this effectively - good community relationships, access to translation services, access to different methods of communicating. #BAMEMaternity
As well as this I’m making use of connections with faith leaders in the community to pass messages along to families who use their facilities. I’m a huge advocate of forming relationships in the community - sad I can’t be out there in person. @Teakisi#BAMEMaternity
I am working hard to try and get some of our info translated in several key languages as I don’t want anyone to miss out on important messages about alterations to care during this pandemic. #BAMEMaternity
Have we considered HOW Comms are delivered and if this is accessible - is there a good range of text, video Comms and graphics? We saw fab Comms from @NHSEngland this morning in BSL and with option of different language subtitles. What’s happening local? #BAMEMaternity
It is so key to ensure service users are kept informed about any changes to their care - good communication and consistency will go a long way when addressing inequalities - but what challenges are there in doing this? #BAMEMaternity
A wealth of information is coming out from different providers about new restrictions in maternity - it can sometimes be overwhelming - add to that not having English as your first language. There may be impacts on the ability to carry out cultural practises too. #BAMEMaternity
We need to ask - what happens if a woman doesn’t know her birth partner can only join at a certain time during labour, or if she doesn’t know there’s been a change to her antenatal appointment. What are the risks of missing information? #BAMEMaternity
Evidence suggests that COVID-19 is having a disproportionate effect on people from BAME backgrounds. There is a national enquiry under way. In maternity, although we know inequalities have been present for some time - it is still worrying and distressing. #BAMEMaternity
Welcome to #BAMEMaternity - discussing accessibility of maternity information during Covid-19. To keep everyone safe there have been changes to many healthcare services including maternity. It is crucial however that these messages reach as many people as possible.
