Seeing quite a few posts calling the recent Solana rent reduction an “airdrop”, which is a bit misleading.

Solana is reducing rent by up to 90%, with the first reduction already live.

When you created token accounts in the past, you had to lock up a certain amount of SOL to keep them rent exempt. Since the required amount is now lower, those accounts are overfunded and the excess SOL can be withdrawn.

For SPL token accounts this can be done using the Token Program’s new WithdrawExcessLamports instruction. It withdraws everything above the new rent-exempt minimum without closing the account or touching your tokens.

So this isn’t free SOL being distributed to users.

It’s SOL you already owned and had locked in your accounts, which you can now reclaim because Solana made onchain storage cheaper.
