more and more leaks like this will keep happening (and might have happened without anybody warning you).

The state of things is such that it is fair to assume that if you ever shared your private data with a website, that data has already been leaked. The internet runs on stacks that have accumulated tech debt and bad practices for decades. I get a chance to review the backend of websites daily and it is unbelievable how even profitable, big companies run on systems that are held together by string.

Unfortunately, in cases like Trezor’s or Ledger’s where your name and address are linked to devices potentially holding valuable stuff, the damage and risk is bigger.

There is no walking back when your name is in a leak. For those lucky enough to have just moved to a new address: defend that privacy fiercely. Whenever you buy something, reduce the risk of your data being leaked by relying on temporary email addresses and P.O. boxes or non residential addresses. Delete accounts from websites and services you no longer use (unfortunately it is likely your data will still be held in old backups even though a company might promise otherwise). Be creative…

not immediately crypto related, but: take care of your online data. And keep it offline whenever you can.

I have worked for nearly 30 years with communities and internet forums, mostly providing maintenance and support. Over the past few weeks, due to a security bug in cPanel - one of the most popular pieces of software used to host hundreds of thousands of websites - thousands and thousands of websites have been defaced, hacked, and had data either destroyed or stolen.

One thing I noticed compared to the past: I have never seen this level of maliciousness and carelessness on such a scale. The "hackers" often completely destroyed the data while asking for a ransom, but in reality, in most cases they did not even hold a copy of that data anymore. In some cases, they even targeted and managed to destroy all backup copies attached to the main server.

I spent the past week helping old friends recover their sites from the brink of oblivion. These are communities into which people poured a lot of passion and effort, and script kids using AI tools to automate the hack, trying to extort some BTC, had no qualms about completely destroying them.

And here is the segue to crypto and your data: make multiple copies of your important data, including your crypto keys, and ALWAYS store them completely offline. Unless you want to lose it all.

Not to be an alarmist, but times have changed, and the risks are higher than they have ever been. Right now there is a dangerous asymmetry (in costs, too): AI makes it much easier to probe and break into systems, while defending them still means protecting countless points of entry, including vulnerabilities that have not yet been discovered in widely used libraries and software.

And the practice devs have had for a (too) long time to blindly include third party libraries into their software make it almost a certainty you are currently using software and websites that are no longer safe for your data.
