@HeraldZimbabwe The reason for people not warming up to half of Macheso's album can be attributed to various factors not just limited to his prowess as a musician. I am disappointed that the whole media house lacked smart to stop such a disrespectful article on one of the greatest Zim musicians.
@HeraldZimbabwe Why then would you undermine Macheso's brand based on a social media poll where the participants of the poll might be a majority of people who have never been Macheso fans. Most likely they might be young people who have grown up in a time when sungura is not the popular genre.
@HeraldZimbabwe A survey for a subjective topic like music preference is one that does not give an accurate position especially in a yes or not kindly of format like you did. Do you even know whether those who answered are sungura fans or not?
@HeraldZimbabwe Its incredible that you run a post like this when only 50% of the album has been released. It is no secret that not everyone is a Macheso fan including probably yourself, so the survey lack credibility for you to put up such a conclusion as a headline.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 I really enjoy our exchanges, I have to go for now, will link up later. Are you attending the Alex Sports Club album launch on 2 August?
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 Maungwe in its formative days only, later they found themselves. Admire Kasenga yes, I agree and what did that do for his career. The problem with copying a brand is that people will always default to the brand owner. I know Kasenga was also labelled a copy cat of Dembo.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 Chief you are not objective, variations are there but your attitude when listening to Cheso is fault finding and you end up exaggerating some things to suit your bias.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 Agreed, even Donny has things that Noel can't do to the same level and vice-versa. Guitarists will never sound the same even when playing the same notes. Cheso is a bassist and lead is a guitar he occasionally plays, so he definitely cannot be at the same level as these two.
@espebass@moyondizvo7@jmakambanga Chesology, the difference with Mudimba is his use of a single rhythm without a sub that create a clean sound but if you listen to his notes, they are borrowed from Chesology. Its not heavy and as bad as others though, so one can easily argue and I can understand.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 How about Dembo and Chopper. Chibadura is another one who despite being a lead guitar wizard did not sound like others. The fact is the current crop of sungura musicians have not brought their own identity into the genre but have heavily borrowed from Chesology.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 The rhythms have never been poor quality. The quality of music production was below par in the studio but the notes remained up to standard.
@espebass@jmakambanga@moyondizvo7 Copying the style of another musician in interpreting the same notes brings about that discussion. Why was Chopper never said to be a copy cat of Dembo when they all played sungura from the same notes. Why did James Chimombe sound different from Tuku?
@espebass@moyondizvo7@jmakambanga He is a sungura alpha. Will everyone agree, definitely, no. But it does not change the reality that he is the sungura alpha, evidenced by the fact that apart from Sulu, and sons of sungura legends who left distinct brands, every other sungura musician plays Chesology.
