Stress-Induced Brain Chemistry Changes Linked to Political Radicalism
A new study explored how brain chemistry shapes political opinions through the threat-based neural switch theory.
The study suggests that stress from events like economic crises and wars shifts brain processes, making individuals more receptive to simplistic and often radical political messages.
This shift involves a transition from complex, goal-directed thinking to more habitual and straightforward information processing.
The research aims to offer insights into mitigating polarization by understanding and potentially adjusting these neural processes, thereby promoting more considered and sophisticated political judgments.

🔴 It is very important for the body to keep the Blood pressure steady.
🔴 The body does this through a mechanism called RAAS.
🔴 RAAS stands for "Renin- Angiotensin- Aldosterone System"
🔴 It is basically a bunch of Hormones/Enzymes working together to control the Blood pressure.
🔴 What it essentially does is monitor that changes in Blood Pressure & make adjustments to keep the balance.
🔴 The 3 components of this system are Renin, Angiotensin-II & Aldosterone (hence the short name RAAS)
🔴 Renin is an enzyme produced by the kidneys that monitors the change in Blood pressure.
🔴 Renin activates a hormone called Angiotensin- II.
🔴 Angiotensin- II forces the blood vessels to constrict, thereby increasing the Blood Pressure.
🔴 Angiotensin- II also stimulates the adrenal glands to produce another hormone called Aldosterone.
🔴 Aldosterone is in charge of controlling the amount of water the kidneys retain. That is done by controlling the Electrolytes.
🔴 When Aldosterone is activated it promotes Sodium retention & Potassium excretion.
🔴 Where Sodium goes, Water follows. This increases water in the blood & hence the blood volume.
🔴 What happens when you pack more substance into the same space? Pressure increases!
🔴 When your Insulin levels are elevated as in the case of Insulin resistance, it stimulates the production of Aldosterone & this whole mechanism get activated.
🔴 So essentially it is not an excess Sodium problem, here it is more a case of Excess sodium retention courtesy of Hyperinsulinemia.
🔴 Some of the commonly used BP meds work by interfering with this system.
🔴 ACE inhibitors type meds (names end with -pril) interferes with the production of Angiotensin - II by blocking the hormone ACE incharge of conversion.
🔴 Angiotensin II receptor blockers (names end with -sartan) directly blocks the effect of Angiotensin II
🔴 Diuretic meds helps get rid of Sodium & thereby reducing the Blood volume.
🔴 There are possibly other mechanisms by which Insulin Resistance impacts Blood pressure, this is the major one.
🔴 And this is not the only reason behind Hypertension. This is without a doubt a major one though.
🔴 Hypertension is not something to be taken likely. Do not get off Meds without Doctors advice!
🔴 Make lifestyle changes, let BP improve, then let Doctor take it off.
🔵 Simple Version:
More Carbs/Sugar = More Insulin = More Sodium retention = Increased BP
