Introducing Haters Gonna Hate.

She used to believe that if enough people misunderstood her, she must be doing something wrong.

The people who matter will judge you by your character. The rest will judge you by their assumptions — and those were never yours to carry.

So let them talk. Let them misunderstand. Let them underestimate you.

Following on from yesterday’s robotics post, I wanted to share some photos taken at the HQ of Figurobot in Shanghai. They are one of several companies whose robotics platform we’re currently evaluating as we explore what the future of Smart Doll could look like.

The reason I asked for your feedback yesterday was because we’ve reached an interesting point. Making Smart Doll move is no longer the biggest challenge. The harder question is what they should actually do to become genuinely useful rather than an animatronic attraction that’s fascinating for 5 minutes and then forgotten.

After reading your replies across Instagram, Facebook and X, one theme stood out.

It wasn’t really about robotics.

It was about companionship.

Many of you said you’d rather have a Smart Doll that could look at you, blink, nod, wave, remember your name, and hold a conversation than simply walk around. The recurring theme was that movement should support interaction and personality, not exist for its own sake.

Many imagined a desktop companion that greets you when you get home, keeps you company while you work, answers simple questions, plays music, or simply feels present.

Just as many said they weren’t interested in robotics at all. For them, Smart Doll is already a companion through photography, sewing, collecting, drawing and storytelling. If electronics ever become part of Smart Doll, they should remain optional.

The maker community also had some great ideas. Rather than a finished robot, many suggested an open platform with room for batteries, Raspberry Pi and similar boards, APIs and tutorials so makers, students and engineers could build their own ideas.

The biggest concerns were cost, repairability, weight, battery life, privacy, reliability, and preserving the simplicity that makes Smart Doll enjoyable today.

Yesterday I asked what Smart Doll should do if they could move.
I think many of you answered a different question entirely:

“How should Smart Doll make me feel?”

That’s an even more interesting problem to solve.

Hey folks! Its time for the Smart Doll Selfie Collage Call-out!

It’s been over three years since our last Smart Doll selfie collage call-out, and a lot has changed at Smart Doll Land since then.

Since the last collage, we’ve introduced the Pear body, Coffee skin tone, lots of new characters, and welcomed many new members to Smart Doll Land.

At the same time, some folks have moved on to other hobbies, so we’d love the collage to reflect the community as it is today. If you appeared in a previous collage, you’re more than welcome to join in again!

If you’d like to be part of it, send your selfie to the Smart Doll support email address—the same one we use to contact you about shipping and other order-related stuff.

A few tips:
-Choose your favorite Smart Doll if you have several. Once cropped into a small square, multiple dolls end up looking like tiny pixies and are barely visible.

-A selfie with your Smart Doll close to your face usually works best, giving both of you the most room in the final crop. We’ve also successfully used photos with two Smart Dolls, as long as they’re snuggled up close to your face. :-)

-Have a look at the previous collage to get an idea of the types of photos that work well.
Please send the original, highest-resolution image you have. Avoid screenshots, heavy filters, or blurry photos.

In the past, we couldn’t use some submissions because they were heavily filtered, low resolution, blurry, unrelated, or because the owner and Smart Doll were simply too small or too far apart in the frame.

I’ve seen so many awesome selfies shared online over the years, but I can only use photos when you’ve given us permission directly. Sending your selfie to our support email lets us know you’re happy for us to include it.

One of my fave things about these collages is that they’ve helped me recognize many of you when we meet at conventions outside Japan. It’s always nice to put a face to the person behind the Smart Doll.

There’s no submission deadline right now. As entries come in, we’ll get a better idea of how many spaces we have available. If needed, we’ll announce a closing date later.

...and if you are up for it...

One of my fave parts of the Smart Doll site has always been the community photos scattered throughout. As we’re refreshing the website theme, we’re updating many of these images too.

If you’d like to be featured, send us a landscape-oriented photo of yourself, your family, or your children together with your Smart Doll.

There’s no obligation to send one, but if you have a favorite photo that captures a special moment, we’d love to see it.

The only thing we ask is that the photo includes people with their Smart Dolls. We’re celebrating the people behind Smart Doll Land, so photos of just the Smart Doll won’t be used for this part of the website.

By sending us your photos, you’re giving us permission to include it in the Smart Doll community collage, which may appear on our website, social media channels (such as Instagram), printed materials, videos, and occasionally on TV, in movies, or in documentaries. :-)
