This year, we are turning awareness into action through impactful activities on campus:

🌿 Green Talk
An interactive session focused on climate change, plastic pollution, and how students can take meaningful action for a sustainable future.

♻️ Plastic Collection Drive
Students and members of the Green Schools Initiative (GSI) will lead a campus-wide plastic collection exercise, promoting responsible waste management and environmental stewardship.

🔄 Upcycling in Action
Collected plastics will be transformed into valuable resources, demonstrating practical solutions to reducing waste and encouraging circular economy practices.

🌳 Tree Planting Exercise
Over 20 seedlings will be planted to mark Earth Day, contributing to increased green cover and a healthier campus environment.

Together, we are empowering young people to lead the change towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

Did you know?
Ghana generates approximately 840,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year, yet only a small fraction is recycled. With a recycling rate of just 4.7%, there is an urgent need to strengthen waste management systems and scale up recycling efforts across the country.

But there is hope. The global recycling industry is growing rapidly, projected to reach $101.6 billion by 2034—a clear signal that sustainable solutions are not just necessary, but also economically viable.

At CORD Ghana, we are committed to driving this transformation by:

✅ Promoting community-led recycling initiatives to reduce plastic pollution
✅ Supporting green entrepreneurship through training and innovation
✅ Engaging schools via the Green Schools Initiative to nurture eco-conscious youth

As part of our commitment at the Center for Opportunities and Rural Development (CORD Ghana) to empower marginalized and hard to reach communities.

There is exciting news from the Naduli community in the Mion District in the Northern Region of Ghana! 🌳💚 The CORD Ghana team, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture Mion, is empowering marginalized communities with nature-based solutions (NbS).

The Savannah Rural Women Voices Assembly (SRWV) chapter of Namduli is thrilled to adopt #biochar production, a sustainable way to tackle water retention and soil health issues. This innovative approach is set to boost crop yields, improve food security, and enhance #livelihoods.

But that's not all! The community is also eager to scale up biochar production and venture into commercial charcoal briquette production, providing a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional charcoal.

Plans are underway to replicate this success in other rural hard-to-reach communities, empowering more women and youth to take charge of their #environment and livelihoods.

Plastic waste plagues Ghanas urban and peri-urban communities, including Tamale, turning streets and waterways into hazards that threaten health,ecosystems and our climate.
Improper disposal fuels pollution, yet these same plastics hold immense potential for resource recovery,entrepreneurship, and green jobs. Young women aged 18-35 especially unemployed graduates, school leavers, and those from vulnerable backgrounds, often face limited economic access but the Waste to Resource Initiative changes that by equipping youth with practical skills to turn waste into wealth.

Today during the day one (1) of the tow (2) days training workshop had participants with 80% been young women understanding waste and categories of waste. They had active learning sessions via hands on engagement with plastic waste to make flowers, fan, pen holders among others. Together we promote a cleaner environment and create green jobs.

The Day 2 and final day of the Sustainable Energy Waste to Resource Initiative (SEWRI) training in Tamale marked a successful conclusion to an impactful capacity-building journey. Organized by CORD Ghana, in partnership with the Department of Gender and YACES, the training empowered participants with practical knowledge and skills in transforming waste into sustainable energy solutions.
The day culminated in a certification ceremony, where participants were officially awarded certificates in recognition of their commitment, active participation, and successful completion of the training. This milestone reinforces our shared goal of promoting sustainable livelihoods, gender inclusion, and climate-smart innovations at the community level.
CORD Ghana remains committed to driving initiatives that support inclusive green development and accelerate local action toward a sustainable future.
