Before the New Delhi BRICS summit, reports of confrontations in Arunachal were dismissed as unsubstantiated. Convenient timing for Modi’s outreach to China.
Jaishankar used to insist that relations “cannot be normal, if the situation in the border areas is abnormal.” The government kept repeating this as though it could dictate the terms. It apparently gave little thought to what would happen if India needed better relations before those conditions were met.
Much of China’s border posture remains unchanged. Modi’s position has changed. Trouble with Washington has made engagement with Beijing more urgent, leaving him struggling to explain his own government’s earlier demands.
Now Shatrujeet Kapur, the serving ITBP chief, has acknowledged continuing face-offs and China’s conventional military advantage before his own personnel. His approaching retirement makes that candour especially significant. With his career nearly over, he may feel freer to voice concerns that officials usually soften in public.
Modi’s government owes the public an explanation for accepting conditions it spent years declaring unacceptable.

The US chip ban was supposed to cripple Chinese AI. Instead it's crippling Nvidia's revenue and building China's self-sufficiency.
Huawei controls half of China's $50 billion AI chip market. 160,000 Huawei chips ordered. A gigawatt-scale data center in Inner Mongolia. DeepSeek designing its own silicon. Chinese open-source models hit 41% of Hugging Face downloads, passing the US at 36.5%.
DeepSeek is likely to rely primarily on Huawei's already mature and well-developed technology stack by 2027 or 2028. CUDA becomes irrelevant. Nvidia becomes optional.
Washington's response? Put DeepSeek on the entity list. Because the last round of sanctions worked so well.
The chip ban is the most expensive own goal in American tech history and nobody in DC will admit it because they'd have to admit the entire strategy was wrong.

The American Dream doesn’t belong to Wall Street. It belongs to the American people.
Thanks to President Trump and Scott Bessent, families don’t have to worry about getting out-bid on their dream homes by private equity barons. And we’re making those same big investors give financial support to families buying their first homes.

Google illegally cut down an estimated 250,000 trees in northern Finland to build a data center, sparking national outrage.
The company cleared 330 hectares of forest near the town of Muhos without first completing the required environmental impact assessments.
Conservationists estimate another 150,000 trees were felled at a second site in Otanmäki.
Finland’s licensing authority ordered Google to stop work at both sites earlier this month.
The sites are part of a €13 billion AI infrastructure project, the largest of its kind in Finland.
SK hynix (official statement): “Our overseas subsidiary, Solidigm, has been exploring various financing options to expand its production capacity and strengthen its competitiveness. However, after taking capital market conditions and other factors into consideration, it has decided to discontinue its evaluation of pre-IPO financing and an initial public offering (IPO).”
Mark Zuckerberg wanted to lock in his power over Meta even if he sold off stock, but directors at the company said no, according to a Meta filing. The episode was triggered by the immense spending required for the company to compete in artificial intelligence.

Huge win for America: Treasury just issued draft restrictions that crack down on American capital funding our primary enemy. The rules would cut off American investment in the Chinese SI sector and add strong new restrictions to ensure that America, not China, leads the way in advanced biotechnology.
Earlier this year, I urged the administration to take exactly this step. Now let’s make the rules permanent!

Viewing the world economy as a system of chokepoints has its own deadly blind spot, Yeling Tan & coauthors write in @ForeignAffairs. It is leading policymakers to focus on capabilities rather than strategy—to fixate on what leverage they have, & what leverage others have over them, rather than considering what happens when many countries build up their chokepoint power all at once. https://t.co/4xvrBBZJGx
