The men of P Company, 75th Rangers—“Papa Company”—were used for the missions others could not do lightly. Small teams. Deep patrols. Long nights near the DMZ watching enemy movement and bringing back the information commanders needed.

It was dangerous work.

But sometimes tragedy came before the patrol even began.

Specialist Four Vernon R. Riley, a Ranger assigned to the 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division, was at a landing zone six kilometers northeast of Con Thien, guiding in an approaching UH-1H helicopter.

In those moments, precision mattered. Rotor wash, dust, noise, and split-second control.

Something went wrong.

The pilot lost control, and the helicopter’s tail boom and rear rotor came down onto Riley.

He suffered catastrophic injuries and was rushed to the 18th Surgical Hospital at Quảng Trị.

He did not survive.

He was 21 years old.

An Army volunteer.
A Ranger of Papa Company.
A young man serving in one of the most dangerous sectors of Vietnam.

Not lost in a firefight.
Lost in the daily hazards of war.

A notable woman from Iranian history was Apranik who commanded a Persian resistance following the invasion by the Muslim Arabs.

She orchestrated guerrilla tactics against the Muslims, aiming for high-impact strikes in brief encounters.

Though the Empire remained unrecovered, Apranik's fight and her refusal to capitulate ignited a broader wave of defiance. Legend has it that she met her end in battle, choosing combat over capture. The white steed she mounted is now emblematic of liberty and her legacy spurred a series of Persian women warriors, who earned the moniker 'Apraniks' in her honor.

In contrast to ancient cultures like the Romans and Greeks which mostly relegated women to strictly domicile roles, Iranian women have played important roles in their countries history and were able to hold positions of power, especially during the Pre-Islamic era.
