A powerful women’s session at the Ilorin Innovation Hub with the British Deputy High Commissioner, Mrs Gill Lever OBE @gillleverobe, convening leaders across government, academia, and the innovation ecosystem. @UKinNigeria
🇺🇸 🤝🏾 🇳🇬 Last month marked a defining milestone for the Ilorin Innovation Hub. We signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Embassy Abuja @usinnigeria, becoming the Embassy’s first public-private partnership outside its American Spaces Network in Nigeria. Speaking at the signing, the U.S. Embassy observed that American companies are already seeking opportunities in Kwara to compete and collaborate in its growing technology sector. That global interest is real, and it points to why this partnership matters. But the work ahead is also deeply local. There are so many talented young people across Kwara State who, until now, simply did not have access to opportunity. This three-year collaboration, spanning artificial intelligence, STEM education, business English, and professional development, is built to reach them. We are proud to anchor this partnership in Ilorin and grateful to the U.S. Mission Nigeria and the Public Diplomacy Counselor for the trust placed in IIH. The work begins now.

Food brands from Ilorin are quietly expanding into Lagos and beyond. First it was Item 7, now Amala Place Ilorin.
Maybe it’s time we stop seeing Ilorin as “upcoming” and start recognizing it as a place shaping what’s next
Her Excellency Ambassador Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq, First Lady of Kwara State @firstladykwara, welcomed Mrs. Gill Lever OBE @gillleverobe, British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria @UKinNigeria, to the Ilorin Innovation Hub, alongside MD Temi Kolawole and @IHSNigeria’s Gbolahan Thomas.
When people say the Ilorin market is “not that big,” I somehow see it differently.
I see a goldmine especially for businesses that want to start small without being swallowed by bigger brands.
When we started @frutosdome in 2021, we made hundreds of mistakes within the first six months. But Ilorin gave us something invaluable: room to learn, adjust, and grow at our own pace. In a market where few people are solving certain problems, your early mistakes are often forgiven and that’s a powerful advantage.
But don’t get it twisted, Ilorin is not an easy market. It forces you to be strategic.
Success here isn’t accidental. It’s earned. A simple decision like choosing the wrong location can break your business. Why? Because the city isn’t widely spread as there are key convergence points, and your positioning must align with how people move, value and where they gather.
Then there’s pricing.
Ilorin is highly price-sensitive, which means your pricing must be intentional and grounded in your cost realities. You can’t rely on impulse buying or population spread like you might in cities like Ibadan or Lagos.
And yet, despite all this, Ilorin has quietly produced brands that have gone on to expand across Nigeria like Hairsense, Bolz & Grills, Foodster, EVC, Item7, and more recently, Amala Place.
Ilorin doesn’t hand you success, it trains you for it. It rewards grit, innovation, and discipline. It teaches you how to earn every single naira. So yes, the Ilorin market may be small. But if you can win here, you’re building something strong enough to thrive anywhere.
If you’re looking to build something meaningful from the ground up, it’s always a good place to start.
