200k+ Scots moved to Ireland and America 1600-1800 when the Scottish highlands got cleared out by economic ruin and political instability
They typically moved to Ireland or America, not England.
All this to say, England's 3x West:North ratio is strange, but Ireland and America reflect ethnic & geographic migrations from the past

@thinkingshivers Scotalnd's population runs east-west, and their two major ethnic groups (high & lowlanders) run along an east/west divide.
Scotland has 20x more "West"s than "North"s.
So any amount of Scottish migration will massively skew Irish / American populations
Euros like to say American borders are random straight lines, but look at this map of cropland out west.
Look how clearly California, Idaho, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah pop out as distinct regions.
Washington knew what they were doing when they drew borders
@BrantPhilip_ They’re all semi arid climates which have been transformed by satellite phones, drones, and motorbikes
This problem isn’t going away, it’s like the Mongols just got horses
The North African coup belt is a tech problem. Drones, cheap motorbikes, and satellite phones changed the game for African Sahel steppe nomads.
These coups happened because the govts can’t secure borders or territory.
This is the tipping point, like giving the Mongols a horse
Europeans tend to greatly exaggerate how bad American food is but the big exception to this is bread. American bread is god awful and in some places you more or less have to bake it yourself if you want good bread
Are newer countries poorer?
If you get a line of best fit through this data, the answer is generally "no". But there's no such thing as a poor old country, or a rich new country.
This tells us:
1. Poor countries eventually get invaded
2. It takes time to get rich, because of the value of stable and proven instutitions
The richest new countries → Qatar and Singapore
The poorest old country → Oman
The oldest poor countries are Liberia (last coup in 1980) and Burundi (Civil war in '05)...
Lots to learn from this data..... getting rich is not a choice, it's a matter of survival
I love maps like this because they help me articulate what makes a place feel more or less like home
South Florida and California are nice, but totally foreign to my senses
