maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but i don’t think the father is the villain here.

from his perspective, he was simply upholding the teachings and beliefs he had dedicated his life to. back then, it wasn’t just same sex relationships that were considered incompatible with the priesthood. even heterosexual romantic relationships weren’t permitted for someone discerning a vocation in the seminary.

i’ve seen people say that the father made tanrak feel guilty, but i don’t think that’s what happened. tanrak was the one who admitted he felt conflicted. the father simply reflected that conflict back to him and asked what path he truly wanted to choose, his calling to God or the love he had found.

what also stands out to me is that, throughout their conversations, the father never portrayed God as someone who hates or is eager to punish. instead, he repeatedly reminded tanrak that God forgives, that His mercy is always there, and that he should never lose sight of that.

that’s why i don’t see him as someone trying to condemn tanrak. he was simply expressing the beliefs he had devoted his life to while guiding someone who was discerning the same vocation under those teachings.

whether we agree with those beliefs today is a different conversation. but within the context of the story, i think his position is completely understandable. he wasn’t forcing tanrak to choose. he was asking him to be honest with himself about the path he truly wanted to follow.
