Freeman defended himself by stating he only received "tens of thousands" of dollars in standard "ad revenue" through X and content distribution networks rather than direct Russian payroll. These firms frequently act as middlemen—taking money from massive PACs, corporate entities, or foreign-adjacent media networks—and then paying individual influencers micro-fees (like his documented $300 repost fee) to blast out specific narratives, giving the influencers plausible deniability about where the original funding originated.
