When we’re one of the best team in the world by the next world cup after all those years in the darkest era of Egyptian football it will all be thanks to him, and thats a bigger legacy than any international trophy. I love you Mo ❤️
O MUNDO ACORDOU
Isso me conforta.
🚨 Real Madrid vs Arsenal last season had a 'Shirt Pulling' incident similar to that in Argentina vs Egypt, one was given as a PENALTY other wasn't. 🧐
What makes it even ridiculous that the refree in both matches was Francois Letexier. 🤥🇫🇷
In the 78 World Cup. Argentina needed to win their final group stage game by 5 goals to qualify for the knockout round. At halftime, up just 2 - 0 against Peru, Argentinian dictator Jorge Rafael Videla & U.S Secretary of State Henry Kissinger paid a visit to the Peruvian locker room. In the second half, Peru inexplicably substituted their best player while trailing by 2 in a must win game. Argentina scored an additional 4 goals, winning the match 6 - 0.
Many of the Peruvian players later claimed they had been pressured to throw the match
It's really starting to sink in. While no sports heartbreak will ever compare to the devastation that was 2002 (group of death), 2006 (another group of death), 2010 (weird tie-breakers and unfortunate fitna with the bros), 2014 (Kumasi), and 2022 (PKs in Dakar) WCQ, this one feels uniquely sad.
I was so used to being heartbroken in World Cup qualifying - to the point I had to sleep it off for hours - that I was just happy to actually qualify. 2018 was such a rush. It didn't feel the same qualifying this time, for multiple reasons, but I was just content being at the party.
I almost forgot the early hopes and dreams I had being a young fan, watching that AFCON '98 squad and thinking, "man, these guys could make some waves in the World Cup knockout rounds," and then never actually seeing it happen until 28 years later. By then, inevitably, one becomes quite jaded. The heartbreaks date back to the 1994 WCQ replay vs. Zimbabwe. We've known nothing but international heartbreak, outside of the Olympics, whether Confederations Cups, World Cups, or World Cup qualifying.
I can't help but think: Are we ever going to be in this position again in my lifetime? We were about to play Switzerland, a solid side who would have been the favorite, but a winnable match. Knocking right on the door of a World Cup semifinal!? Unreal.
Like I said, the heartbreaks some of us have experienced have inevitably hardened us. I'm not sure it's possible anymore for me to be as gutted about football as I was experiencing the heartbreaks listed above. But again, this one is uniquely sad. An opportunity many of us have lived for as decades-long fans that was just so coldly and cruelly stolen from us like it's nothing.
And more than myself or other fans, I feel terrible for the players and coaches. I mean, I know they'll probably recover mentally and emotionally, but how does this not completely change how you view the game? Every time you sacrifice it all, sweat, bleed, etc. while dreaming of a deep run, how do you not think, "is it really worth it though? Can't they just decide we're not gonna win regardless? What's actually the point?"
That said, I also keep reminding myself of what I mentioned in that postmortem thread... that if someone offered me this World Cup before it started I would have signed that contract so fast the pen would break. And in defeat, so much more has been exposed than if we had ended up winning. For the first time ever, we leave a senior FIFA tournament with dignity and the world's respect.
There's a reason so many folks these days call sports "goy slop." I can acknowledge that there is merit to that, but for someone like me - and I'm sure so many of you - I don't know what I could possibly replace this lifelong love affair with. Shoot, I already lost my NFL team.
What I do know is that football is just the latest institution, in a long line of them since 2020, that so many folks will never be able to look at quite the same again.
So he can kiss the wall, meet Netanyahu, have Israeli security at his wedding, be openly against Hamas who was the only voice for the Palestinians being slaughtered in Palestine, gift jerseys to Israeli jews but still not be a Zionist.
Okay 👍
