In Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day invasion, my father Mohamed Meri from British Somaliland was among the US Army Soldiers who landed in Normandy on D-Day. He was one of the only known Somali soldiers in the United States Army in WWII.
President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro), has returned home today following an official visit to Davos, Switzerland, where he participated in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.
During his engagements, the President highlighted Somaliland’s enduring record of peace, democratic governance, and its growing role as a reliable partner for investment and regional cooperation.

To my fellow citizens of the Republic of Somaliland, home & abroad, I extend my sincere greetings and appreciation, and convey my best wishes for enduring peace, stability, and prosperity.
Today, at the Presidential Palace, I received
@gidonsaar H.E. Mr. Gideon Sa’ar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel, and a high-level delegation on an official visit to the Republic of Somaliland, the first such visit by a foreign minister in 34 years after recognition. I conveyed my deep appreciation to the Government of Israel for its historic and courageous decision of 26 December 2025 to formally recognize the Republic of Somaliland. This milestone reflects a relationship founded on mutual respect and shared interests, aimed at cooperation and stability without prejudice to any party.
I emphasized that this recognition opens a new chapter of formal diplomatic relations, security, economic, and development cooperation, serving the mutual interests of both nations and contributing positively to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
I also reaffirmed that Somaliland is a reliable and responsible partner, strategically positioned and committed to advancing regional and international peace, security, and constructive engagement.
This is a historic moment as we warmly welcome @netanyahu the Prime Minister of the State of Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland and affirm Somaliland’s readiness to join the Abraham Accords. This step marks the beginning of a strategic partnership that advances mutual interests, strengthens regional peace and security, and delivers shared benefits to all stakeholders, without prejudice to any party.
If one is to read but one post addressing the legitimacy of Somaliland’s claims to independence and sovereignty, this is the one. Somaliland not only has a de facto basis for independence, but a de jure one as well, dating back to the end of British colonial control.
The President of #Somalia acknowledged earlier that Somalia committed heinous crimes in #Somaliland in the 1980s. Last night, his representative to the UN denied the atrocities, contrary to the well-documented crimes his own president has accepted of their existence.
I had a fruitful meeting today with the UK Ambassador H.E Charles King. We reflected on the deep historical ties between the Republic of Somaliland and the United Kingdom, discussed our shared commitment to peace, mutual security, democratic governance, and long-term strategic cooperation.
I expressed our appreciation for the UK’s continued partnership in strengthening stability and advancing sustainable development in our country.
The Republic of Somaliland deeply values this enduring relationship and looks forward to elevating our cooperation to new dimensions.
We welcome support for Somaliland in the State Department Reauthorization bill, advanced today by @HouseForeignGOP. The bill encourages the State Department to consider establishing a representative office in Hargeisa and to update the travel advisory for Somaliland, reflecting a growing recognition of opportunities for U.S. engagement. We appreciate the Members who elevated these priorities, building on the leadership shown by Chairman Chris Smith of @CECCgov and @RepMoolenaar of @committeeonccp in their recent letter to @SecRubio.
We urge Congress to act on this important legislation and look forward to continued partnership.
As the proud sponsor of The Republic of Somaliland Independence Act in the House, I’m happy to see @SenTedCruz carrying the ball on the Senate side for these great people.
Leave it to the Senator from the great State of Texas to call for US to formally recognize Somaliland. As we all know Somaliland is already a fully functioning effectively governed nation - only lacking diplomatic recognition. Time to end the hypocrisy!

BREAKING: @SenTedCruz, chairman of @SenateForeign Africa Subcommittee, calls for #USA🇺🇲 recognition of #Somaliland’s restored sovereignty, arguing that it is in America’s national security interests and advances important military, counterterrorism & economic partnerships.👏
Thank you @SenTedCruz for your endorsement of U.S. recognition of our Somaliland, and your outreach on the behalf of our noble cause to @realDonaldTrump.
Tomorrow morning, Somaliland will wake up to learn that you have stood up to be counted as our ally. It will not be forgotten. Somaliland and the U.S. have so much to gain from a closer partnership, and we are privileged to have such friends in Congress at this critical time.
Flashback - As the world today remembers the 81st annivetsary of D-Day, let us recall Somaliland heroes who risked their lives in liberating the world from nazism. Mohamed Meri was in the U.S. army that landed in Normandy on D-Day!
@DeptofDefense.
Delighted to have met with Amb. @DrJPPham to thank him for his longtime support for Somaliland. I enjoyed his scholarly insights about Africa, the volatile region of the HoA and his admiration for the resilience of Somaliland in building a stable state with a robust economy.
Happy to meet with #Somaliland Foreign Minister @min_abdirahman & Rep to the U.S. @baruud, envoys of a gov’t democratically elected in 1-person-1-vote polls that governs a peaceful & secure polity — opposite of the unelected Mog regime delivering nada for billions in #USA🇺🇲 aid.
