Thanks to you, Cincinnati, he’ll get the opportunity to keep delivering for you the next four years.
Mahmoud Abu Foul, a Palestinian detainee released under the Israel-Hamas Gaza ceasefire deal, says he was left blind by months of torture in Israeli prisons and now longs for treatment to restore his sight.
RIP Tito Jackson. Without his courage to defy his dad & pick up his guitar, we might not have witnessed the birth of the Jackson 5 or seen Michael Jackson become the greatest entertainer. Tito’s talent as a guitarist was the foundation of it all 🤍🕊️
Hello Twitter family I am here to ask y'all a favor to share this tweet across all your socials as I am about to share a story that has been one of the saddest and sensitive topic in my family that is my missing aunt from my mom side.
#Ethiopia: Birr devaluates by initial 30% as Ethiopia introduces market-based exchange regime
https://t.co/VwESBVFfAi
The National Bank of Ethiopia (#NBE) announced today a shift to a market-based exchange regime as part of a major revision of the country’s foreign exchange (FX) system. The move follows the government’s announcement yesterday regarding Ethiopia’s macro-economic reform program.
According to the NBE, banks are now permitted to buy and sell foreign currencies from and to their clients and among themselves at freely negotiated rates. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia reported a buying rate of 74 and a selling rate of 76 birr per 1 USD, showing a 30% devaluation within a day.
The American Embassy in #Addis_Abeba commented, “Implementing a market-based foreign exchange system is a tough but essential move for addressing Ethiopia’s macroeconomic issues.” They further urged, “We encourage the government to work with development partners to implement these reforms.”
A 🧵 ..
I get many DMs from young and millennial Ethiopians abroad on the potential of coming back to Ethiopian to invest or open their own businesses. The response I give is always similar. I figured I publicly share what I usually write on here. Below are things to look for:
I don’t think my heart would be able to take it if I was in a room with hundreds of people clapping for the man responsible for my people’s genocide so what Rashida is doing here is just so fucking immense.
Sonya Massey was somebody. She was treated like nothing by the officers who shot her after she called them for help.
Sonya should still be alive today.
We say ‘Black lives matter’ because it’s clear that to many, our lives don’t matter.
Sonya mattered. We matter.
#Ethiopia: Ethiopian Airlines clarified the change in payment for air tickets policy for travelers to and from Ethiopia.
Accordingly, the Airlines said that effective immediately, passenger tickets for flights originating outside of Ethiopia must be purchased in the currency of the country where the passenger begins the journey, or hard currency, regardless of the place of ticket purchase. "This change is in line with a new directive from the National Bank of Ethiopia and applies to all airlines operating in Ethiopia," the national carrier said.
For tickets originating from Ethiopia including Ethiopian nationals and foreigners with a resident permit, work permit, diplomatic ID, or yellow card issued by the Ethiopian government can still purchase tickets in local currency (ETB).
However, foreign nationals who do not have one of the above documents and are buying their tickets in Ethiopia should pay in hard currency.
