As another man who once worked with me declares himself saddened by my beliefs on gender and sex, I thought it might be useful to compile a list for handy reference. Which of the following do you imagine makes actors and directors who aren’t involved with the HBO reboot of Harry Potter so miserable?
Is it my belief that women and girls should have their own public changing rooms and bathrooms?
That women should retain female-only rape crisis centres?
That men don’t belong in women’s sport?
That female prisoners shouldn’t be incarcerated with violent men and male sex offenders?
That women should remain a protected class in law, because they have sex-specific needs and issues?
That language should reflect reality rather than ideological jargon, especially in a medical context?
That women shouldn’t be harassed, persecuted or fired for refusing to pretend humans can change sex?
That women should not be threatened with violence and rape when they assert their rights?
That freedom of speech and belief are essential to a pluralistic democratic society?
That troubled minors, especially those who are gay, autistic and trauma-experienced, should be given mental health support instead of irreversible surgeries and drug treatments on non-existent evidence of benefit?
That gay people shouldn’t be pressured to include the opposite sex in their dating pools, nor should they be smeared as ‘genital fetishists’ when they don’t?
That cross-dressing heterosexual male fetishists aren’t actually oppressed, but having the time of their lives piggybacking off gender identity ideology?
That said ideology, and the privileged, blinkered fools pushing it because they suffer zero consequences themselves, have done more damage to the political left’s credibility than Trump and Farage could have achieved in a century?
Let me have your thoughts.
4) Let's learn how to leverage new technologies, but let's also learn how to become better versions of ourselves.
Ask yourself: what is one thing you know you want to improve but you are not taking action on? You can take the smallest action today to achieve that goal and contribute to our collective evolution as an individual. It is not tomorrow, it is now.
1) The Tech is Advancing. Are We?
If you've watched Star Trek, you've likely felt that familiar pang of envy, not just for their incredible technology, but for a vision of humanity working together with genuine excitement toward shared goals.
3) I feel extremely lucky to be alive to witness the developments we have and to be able to use them. I am also aware that for all of us to reach a better future, we have to evolve as humans, learn to bring our cognition forward with self-regulation so we don't carry our current violence toward each other to any other planet.
What's interesting is that it's not exactly what's going to happen that makes you conserve your self-regulation strength. It's what you "think" will happen that makes you conserve it.
1) Your willpower is limited and you are protecting it without knowing.
Baumeister and colleagues showed that self-regulation acts like a limited resource that takes time to replenish. It gets depleted when we use it, but interestingly, we also unconsciously conserve it when we anticipate needing it for future tasks.
Also, the less self-regulation battery we have in the moment, the more we want to conserve it for future tasks that we "think" will require willpower. If we are already drained, we will be in a stricter conservation mode.
4) But with a life spent with the wrong people, you don't have anything left for yourself.
Choose your people wisely. They might be consuming your potential insidiously.
1) People around might insidiously kill your potential.
Roy Baumeister and his colleagues conducted several experiments that show our willpower acts like a limited resource that needs to be replenished after use. When you are stressed or challenged by a task that requires self-regulation (including emotional regulation), your resource gets depleted.
3) This means that after these acts, if you try to resist a slice of pizza, you will struggle more than usual.
When we are surrounded by people where we don't belong, we consistently act in ways that don't align with who we are. We don't say what we really think, we try to suppress our emotions, and we act in ways to fit in with the group.
These acts deplete our willpower resource.
We need willpower strength to challenge our current version and evolve into our newer and better versions.
We can always "chose" to not take anything personally. What others say and do are related to their own construct, they are not related to you. Save your cognitive energy to create, not entertain other's realities.
