What is “Tabsil” in Oman?

Tabsil is a traditional Omani method of preparing and preserving half-dried dates, known locally as “Basour”. It’s a centuries-old practice carried out during the date harvest season, especially in summer.

How is it done?
1.Harvesting ripe dates (usually from “Mabsali” or “Khalas” date varieties).
2.Boiling the dates in large pots of hot water until their color changes.
3.Sun-drying the dates on palm fronds or mats for several days.
4.Storing them in traditional palm baskets or sacks for later use.

Why is it done?
•To preserve dates for longer periods.
•To use them as a food ingredient or serve with traditional Omani coffee.
•For local sale and export, especially to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

When does it happen?
During June and July, when the dates ripen.

Is it a social tradition too?
Yes — in many Omani regions, Tabsil is a community activity where families and neighbors gather to participate.
