Ballon d'or has three main criteria; team success, individual brilliance and discipline. Let's focus on the most important competitions in each ballon d'or year; World Cup and club football in that order.

A player could be really good but then lack of team success would break his chances. Example is Mbape.

A player could achieve team success but be below par in personal input and this again would reduce his chances. Example is Yamal.

A player might have individual brilliance and team success but fail in character. This is the only valid reason for Vini's miss.

In a world cup year, players performance contributes mainly to their chances in the ballon d'or, Messi (2026) and Modric (2018) benefited from this.

Kane had a stellar season with Bayern and England in the world Cup and also seems the most well-behaved among the top contenders.

Both Yamal and Ruiz enjoyed team success but on individual brilliance, Yamal edges him so logic hardly brings Ruiz into the conversation ahead of Yamal.

The ballon d'or award could be biased and voters can be sentimental but the pattern for most editions remain clear.
