Hace entre 6.000 y 8.000 años, cuando el Sahara no era un desierto sino una sabana verde llena de ríos y lagos, alguien pasó semanas enteras arrodillado sobre una roca, golpeándola centímetro a centímetro con una piedra, para dejar grabada una jirafa de seis metros de altura.

Es lo que hoy se conoce como los petroglifos de Dabous, en las estribaciones de las montañas del Aïr, a unos 110 kilómetros al norte de Agadez, en Níger. Son dos jirafas talladas sobre una roca de arenisca: una macho, de mayor tamaño, y otra hembra, más pequeña. La precisión anatómica es tal que durante décadas los investigadores han debatido cómo lograron esa proporción perfecta sin instrumentos de medición, picando la piedra con herramientas de sílex hasta crear el contorno y después puliendo el interior para simular las manchas de la piel.

No fue un gesto aislado. Alrededor de estas dos jirafas se han catalogado 828 imágenes más grabadas en las rocas cercanas: ganado, avestruces, antílopes, leones, rinocerontes y camellos, además de 61 figuras humanas. En la zona también se han encontrado restos de madera petrificada, prueba de que aquello fue, durante miles de años, un ecosistema exuberante y no la extensión de arena que conocemos hoy. Los arqueólogos llaman a ese periodo el "Sahara verde".

Las jirafas fueron registradas por primera vez en 1987 por el arqueólogo francés Christian Dupuy, pero el mundo no las conoció hasta 1997, cuando el fotógrafo David Coulson las documentó durante una expedición.

Lo que casi nadie sabe es que, en 2022, el paleontólogo Nikos Solounias planteó algo inquietante: el patrón de manchas grabado en la jirafa de Dabous no coincide con el de ninguna especie viva. Según su hipótesis, el grabado podría representar una especie extinta, a la que llamó Giraffa sahara, hoy desaparecida y de la que no se ha encontrado ni un solo hueso. Si tiene razón, este dibujo en piedra sería el único registro que queda de un animal que ya no existe.

Además, entre las figuras hay 17 inscripciones en tifinagh, la escritura que todavía usan hoy los tuareg, señal de que esta roca siguió siendo un lugar significativo durante miles de años después de que se tallara la primera jirafa. Por el riesgo de erosión y saqueo, en 1999 se hizo un molde exacto de los grabados para preservarlos; una réplica en aluminio se exhibe hoy en el aeropuerto de Agadez.

Disney had its own paint laboratory, built by a woman named Mary Weiser, the first of its kind in animation. Its job was to invent shades that did not exist yet. In the early thirties, when the studio was still making shorts, there were around eighty shades on the shelves. By the time they finished Snow White there were fifteen hundred.

Every one of them went on by hand, cel by cel, and each cel needed hours to dry before it could be photographed.

The Ink and Paint department was almost entirely women. According to the Walt Disney Family Museum, the paints were sometimes named after them, and to have a color carry your name was considered an honour.

So the dark of Bambi's forest, the lamplight in Geppetto's workshop, the blue at Cinderella's attic window: none of it is a filter or a setting or a dimmer turned down. Each is a specific colour that a specific person mixed in a jar, and some of those jars had her name on the label.

That is why these scenes still feel more alive than anything made since. We went from hands, to computers, to AI, and at every step there is a little less of the person left in it…
