@ERobbPrincipal@LRobbTeacher I’ve always have liked this quote, You are responsible for the energy you bring into this space.” Such an important reminder. I love this sign posted at IU University Health:
Instead of my student knows “Zero English” how about “Beginning to learn English.” Or let’s place the crux where it is: “I know zero of my student’s home language and want to help my student begin in their bilingual journey. Where do I begin.”
Teachers always complain about how principals & admin don’t remember what it’s like to be in an actual classroom.
Today I’m trying to remember that our students must feel the exact same way about us.
I never had a “favorite” teacher growing up. I was often overlooked for the far more outgoing students.
That’s why when I became a teacher I wanted to make sure every student left my classroom knowing how important they were to me.
We all want to be seen and feel valued.
I think the most frustrating part for me about being a teacher right now is that the school system is like, “You need to change everything about what you do.”
And when we’re like, “Can you maybe change a little bit to help us?”
They’re like, “Lol. Don’t be stupid.”
As an ELs’ case manager, I have no problem talking with our Ss about missing assignments, motivation, & class work compliance.
However, it is also my duty to hold teachers accountable to modifying instruction for Ss’ access.
It’s a two-way street. 🔛

@NiaEducational I'm wondering what is worse, not providing intervention to struggling learners... or not providing evidence-based instruction in tier 1 that avoids having so many struggling learners.
"If half the kids can't read without paying for outside tutors, you don't have an 'intervention problem' - you have a core instruction problem."
An official told me that was "deep"
My respnse: It's really not. We just abandoned common sense to justify practices and outcomes.
One more significant shift is the idea that...
The amount of time the ELL specialist is in the classroom DOES NOT equal the amount of support the students are receiving. Co-planning IS Co-teaching.

I am often praised (as a white educator) for being bilingual, when the students & families I serve are often dismissed for their bilingualism. It's unnerving. We have to unpack this. Prepping some content for this Friday's Ohio Dual Language Summit.
Came across #translatemyslide add on . Game changer for any T who has to translate for EL students. There is a setting to translate the entire google slides presentation. 👇👇👇👇
We differentiate instruction because not all multilingual learners are the same.
They each bring unique strengths, individual English levels, and distinct styles of learning to the table. 💪
