15 yrs in big tech (Baidu→Alibaba→Xiaohongshu→ByteDance)
Left at 38 to buy back my time
Helping Chinese brands go global
Writing the escape playbook
i left ByteDance.
after 15 years inside Chinese big tech — Baidu, Alibaba, Xiaohongshu,
ByteDance — i walked away at 38, giving up my year-end bonus to do it.
everyone asked why. the honest answer: i did the math.
the real return of a job is not salary minus rent. it's income minus
(emotional cost + health cost + opportunity cost). once i ran that
equation, staying was the expensive choice.
i'm not anti-big-tech. the machine gave me everything: skills, money,
network, the ability to see how a billion people use software. but
there's a difference between using the machine and being used by it.
the plan was always to leave. join big tech to learn. leave to build.
the only question was when leaving became cheaper than staying.
that day came in 2025.
now i help Chinese brands go global, and write about how to buy your
life back from the corporate machine.
the escape is not quitting. the escape is building a life where you
can walk away at any time. the exit is a muscle. train it early.
i'll share the playbook here.
