FEDERAL MINISTRY OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
PRESS RELEASE
AUGUST 28, 2025
*President Tinubu Declares Open the Strategic Youth Leadership Conference at the National Defence College*
The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade @ayowisdom_, represented His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, at the Opening Ceremony of the Strategic Youth Leadership Conference held at the National Defence College, Abuja.
The Conference, jointly organised by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the National Defence College, convened young leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders under the theme “Youth and Leadership: Building a Foundation for Sustainable Strategic Leadership.”
In his address, President Tinubu underscored the vital role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s future, noting that with over seventy percent of the population being youth, the destiny of the nation lies in their hands. He affirmed that the energy, resilience, and creativity of the youth remain Nigeria’s greatest assets. However, he cautioned that energy without direction and potential without preparation could lead to frustration, stressing that the Conference provides a timely platform to instil values of ethical, innovative, and sustainable leadership.
The President reiterated that youth development occupies a central place in his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He outlined ongoing strategic interventions designed to equip young Nigerians with skills, opportunities, and platforms to lead in diverse sectors. These include initiatives such as the Nigerian Youth Academy, which is targeting millions of youths with digital and vocational skills; the 3 Million Technical Talent Programme designed to position Nigeria as a global hub for advanced digital skills; the Digital Literacy for All initiative aimed at achieving seventy percent national literacy by 2027; as well as employment and enterprise programmes to generate millions of new jobs. Other interventions include the Nigeria Health Fellowship, agricultural empowerment schemes, creative industry residencies, climate resilience corps, eco-friendly transport schemes, and dedicated youth enterprise loan facilities.
President Tinubu charged participants to seize the opportunity of the Conference to learn, collaborate, and build strong networks that will define the nation’s future. He urged them to let their ideas, connections, and passion fuel the journey towards a greater Nigeria, reminding them that leadership is about impact and must begin within their immediate communities.
He further called on policymakers, educators, community leaders, and partners to create enabling environments that will support mentorship, inclusive governance, quality education, and economic empowerment for Nigerian youth.
Declaring the Conference open, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a Nigeria where every young person has the opportunity to lead and contribute meaningfully to national development, reminding all present that the Nigeria desired tomorrow depends on the leadership built today.

Datti Baba has this to say on the coalition.
"I don’t yet see anyone in this coalition who can scheme and plan over 16 years. With all due respect to Atiku, he has contested consistently—this will be the seventh time. But tell me: is there anyone else in the coalition who will say, “Let it be the other person, and I will support them”? I’m yet to see that. Everyone seems only interested in their own candidacy.
"But what did Tinubu do? He invested in Buhari, unreliable as Buhari was. He backed him—and after Buhari, he took over. He stayed committed for 16 years and took it in 2023.
"Tinubu gave Atiku the ACN in 2007. Gave it to Ribadu in 2011. Backed Buhari in 2015. And waited until 2023 to take it himself. I’m saying: to defeat this phenomenon called Tinubu, you must do the unthinkable.
"If this coalition—which I recognise—thinks it’s business as usual, it won’t work. It has to be less about individual ambition and more about Nigeria. More action, less talk. Because talk is cheap..."
Today, the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande received a high-level delegation from The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) led by Mr. Uzoma Nwagba, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. This significant meeting took place at the Ministry's headquarters in Abuja and served as a vital platform for both parties to explore potential collaborations focused on enhancing youth access to consumer credit and improving financial empowerment opportunities across Nigeria.
During the meeting, the Honourable Minister expressed heartfelt appreciation for CrediCorp's ongoing commitment to providing inclusive financial solutions tailored to the needs of young people. He highlighted the indispensable role that youth-centered credit initiatives play in fostering entrepreneurship, generating job opportunities, and driving sustainable national development.
The Minister stressed that equipping young individuals with the right financial tools and knowledge could catalyze a more innovative and economically vibrant Nigeria, ultimately benefiting the nation as a whole.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Development, Olubunmi Olusanya, echoed these sentiments, embracing the collaboration as a welcome opportunity to engage with Nigeria's youth population. He emphasized that such initiatives would offer young entrepreneurs the resources they need to improve and expand their businesses, thereby increasing their contributions to the local economy. In his remarks, Mr. Nwagba reiterated CrediCorp's unwavering dedication to supporting young Nigerians through a variety of innovative credit schemes designed to address their unique challenges. He underscored the importance of partnering with the Ministry to develop programs that not only facilitate access to credit but also promote financial literacy, ensuring that young people understand how to manage and utilize credit responsibly.
