He looked at me like it was a strange question and said, ‘What do you mean?’

I said, ‘Mbappe says nobody had a better season than him. Yamal says he deserves it. Every day somebody is making their case. Then they ask you and you start thanking your teammates.’

Harry said, ‘What do you want me to say? I had the season I had. People will decide.’

That is Harry.

Sometimes I think he doesn’t understand how these individual awards work. You’re supposed to remind everybody how good you are. Harry will score all these goals, win with Bayern, reach the Champions League semi final, take England to a World Cup semi-final, then somebody puts a microphone in front of him and suddenly we’re hearing about how important the dressing room was.

I told him, ‘Harry, this is the Ballon d’Or. They are only giving one.’

He laughed.

But maybe people are overlooking him because he makes everything sound normal.

We watched him wait years for people to use trophies against him. Then he starts winning them and somehow everybody immediately finds something more interesting to discuss.

And I understand why. Harry doesn’t create much noise. There is no campaign. There is no controversy every week. He isn’t telling everybody that the award belongs to him.

But if we’re judging the football, eventually somebody has to open the folder.

The goals are there. The trophies are there. Bayern went deep in Europe. England went deep at the World Cup. And through all of it, he was Harry Kane.

So maybe that’s his campaign.

Mbappe can make his case. Yamal can make his case. Nothing wrong with that.

Harry seems to have decided his season can make his.
