Sony has confirmed it is selling its Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition at a loss, calling the move a “strategic investment” for the future.
The console costs ¥55,000 in Japan, around €300, much cheaper than the same hardware in Western markets. It is locked to Japanese language and PlayStation accounts, preventing resale overseas.
Sony aims to bring more players into the PlayStation ecosystem and grow its business in Japan, where the brand has lost ground.
Hideaki Nishino, President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the lower price as “a strategic investment rather than a sacrifice” and expects to recover the cost through the wider PlayStation business over time.
He clarified that this does not mean prioritizing Japan over other regions, adding that PlayStation continues to operate with a global perspective while investing in long-term growth markets.
