Reforestation progress
The first picture shows an area I planted banana and poro trees last year to provide shade. In one year the area became cooler, shady, and plants are thriving.
This area had been planted for four years but was really struggling. Part of this area is coffee and half is being reforested. The coffee is thriving, it’s already producing bananas and it is intercropped with yuca, pigeon peas and Mexican sunflower. Everything started thriving when The bananas were planted.
In time the big trees will choke out the little crops and even the bananas but until then the smaller stuff will choke out grass, protect trees and provide food .
The transformation has been incredible. I am planting lots more bananas this year to help out the other planted trees.
I wish I knew then what I know now. We could be a lot further along in our efforts to provide better habitat for jungle critters.
The last two pictures shows an area a harvest from a single plant of yucca/manioc/tapioca or whatever you call it where you live. Enough for two meals for a big family. It was delicious. I generally have 100 or more of these planted so we eat yucca a lot
Loose Cows and planting bananas
I woke up to 30 cows near my house. My dog kept them away from the house but they sure tore up the ground. I got ahold of the owner and we got the cows into his pasture. It was fun seeing my neighbor since we don’t talk much but not how I wanted to spend my day.
I was planning on planting a bunch of trees but that sidetracked me a bit. I managed to plant six more banana trees/plants with my kids but no time for more than that.
So maybe 50 more banana plants planted in the last month and 20 or so reforestation type trees. I don’t think the cows killed too many plants and didn’t get into these section I had been working on.
We also weeded and cleaned around 300 or so trees in the section where we planted bananas. Another 400 or so to clean around tomorrow and then done with tree care for a bit and can concentrate on planting.
The top section near my house is starting to grow up and with the shade from the new bananas should really transform that area in the next year.
The section the cows got into was planted with about 10,000 trees last year by a conservation group and it looks to me like only about 15 percent lived. They will replant three times a year but I think it will be up to me to clear more and plant more appropriately.
That was my day, besides crypto stuff and eating tasty food.
GM! We can't deny that markets have been really unforgiving and tough, but...

Reforestation and cutting trees
I spent today cutting firewood for the wet season. We cook over fire for two of our meals each day. We use a lot of wood. I am always planting new trees but oddly others seem to constantly need cutting.
Our fence lines are living fences and generally a tree called Guachepelin. This is a tree used mainly for posts, if you build with the posts they generally stay alive, are nearly impervious to bugs and water and last decades at least. Every year I cut these down yo 8 feet or so each year and harvest the bigger limbs for posts and smaller ones for cooking wood. I can also just shove them back in the ground and they grow to need up the fence.
There are also lots of native pioneer species that grow quickly but then dir and need removed. Poro trees shade my coffee crops and I cut these in different parts of the year to give coffee more sun or shade depending on the season.
I use a chainsaw at least weekly and a machete every day. It seems like a constant cycle. Chopping up some plants uo for biomass, others to feed animals, chopping up 25 foot tall banana plants a few times a week. Constantly clearing, chopping, planting and harvesting.
Also.. chainsawing and weedwhacking are ridiculously tiring for using a power tool.
And obviously I drew a bit and did crypto stuff in between while cooling off
It is the start of the wet season here. Getting trees planted and finishing up projects. It will now rain substantially every day until December.
I will keep planting stuff every day until August or so but now will have plenty of time to hang out and relax since rain starts at noon at the latest.
The dry season is short but you get used to the dry weather. You can’t plant anything and manly do building projects and go to the river to cool off. You also plan plantings of crops and trees for mid April.
The downside to the start of the wet season is grass and “weeds” grow so fast. Weed whacking becomes an every morning task. By the time I finish all that I care for the first section needs done again.
This year I would still like to get more trees in the ground in May. I am fine in general reforestation species but would love to get some fast growing shade trees in to protect them, hopefully trees that are nitrogen fixes and good for the soil.
Maybe just getting ten or so banana trees in a week if not able to get anything else. I can always plant bananas, Poro and Mexican sunflowers since ther grow from cuttings.

Our very first double sided prints, took some trial and error but the process was fun and we learnt a lot.

they got the best merch in the game. Hands down.
Do you want a tree planted?
A while back people were talking about a tree planting crypto and I told them they could simply give me ten dollars and I would plant a tree and get a picture.
I then realized for like 50 I can hire help and plant 40 trees. If you buy an NFT or $FILF the money goes towards trees but if you want it can be even simpler.
I am working to get a site where you can pay, get a tree and a custom Doge nft with pictures but that is not quite here.
If you simply like the idea of reforestation and rainforest restoration just message me. It is planting season and anything you could do would be appreciated. Trying to get a lot done this year.

Mindfulness and perseverance.
We are working to reforestation the majority of our land. The American perspective that you plant thousands of trees and you are done but that is not the reality. Every tree you plant needs to be taken care of.
You are not planting one thing but thousands of separate tree that each need different care. You can’t simply take care of them as if they are a single crop.
Mindfulness is not being preoccupied with the future or the past but simply living in the present. When doing manual labor it means you can simply care for one tree and then walk two paces and do it again, and again, and again. One plant at a time, not worrying about the next. Hour after hour, day after day, simply enjoying the process. In time they all will be done but by then the first ones need care again. A never ending cycle that keeps you busy and your mind occupied.
Once you get used to just plugging along and not really focused on goals or outcomes you find out it is very relaxing and things get done. No worries about how many plants you got done or how many to go but simply doing what you can.
I only really care for the plants near my home which is maybe 5000 trees, 10,000 coffee plants, 160 pineapples plus seasonal crops. The other parts are maintained in large part by a conservation group with me dealing with specific trees that I maintain and care for.
When they work they also go one plant at a time. 40 guys with with a machete and curved stick or a shovel. One tree cleaned up at a time or if dead one hole dug at a time, later one plant is planted at a time. Just laughing and enjoying the work and slowly getting done. They stop for a coffee break and lunch; when they stop they are 100 percent not working and really enjoy their break. No rushing anything but simply plugging away until their day is done.
A different mindset, a different focus. One thing at a time, over and over until their time is done. When done they get a bear and chill. The money they make buys near and food, music and fun for their family on the weekend. No big plans or big purchases. Eat, drink, shelter, family, and fun.
I understand this was rambling but it is something I find really cool. That life doesn’t need to be about goals, hustling, or planning for the future. You can simply plug along and enjoy the journey.
In the pictures every bamboo pole marks a different tree that needs care.
