I tried Inkling, here are some initial thoughts from a PM perspective:

- There seems to be a shift in the market now that value lies more in specialized and customizable models, which Inkling is catering to. Frontier models would probably stay the entry point for generalist stuff, but mature products seem to want specialized models they contro for cost, quality, and not being at the mercy of someone else's API. Inkling is positioning itself there.

- The Tinker and Inkling ecosystem is particularly interesting offering, a custom fine-tunable model and a platform to fine tune it.

- I think they intentionally did not want to be SOTA, which is a big shift from how Frontier labs operate. they're trying to be the best starting material for fine-tuning. The whole release makes sense through that lens: open weights, broad training across domains instead of narrow optimization, Tinker as the tuning platform, and a "family of models" already announced.

- Inkling's voice is distinct from other models as it conclusion-first, heavy on structure, and unusually explicit about where its uncertainty is. Inkling seems less interested in sounding certain than in making the boundary of its certainty legible.
