Extremely insightful conversation on Hacker News about edtech startups in context of Karpathy's new Eureka labs.
Even from my brief Coursera days, monetizing was tough. And it's a (mere?) $1.2B outcome today.
international startups --- traction in a local market has an unintentional negative impact on sorting product/market fit in the U.S.
a theme I've seen over and over
meaning it takes longer to sort than if you were to tackle U.S. on Day 1
why?
traction/success abroad seldom puts you further ahead in U.S., in fact, it might require some unwinding
this shocks & frustrates many to hear, but here's why ...
> product/positioning shaped by local customers
> quick wins from local networks give false confidence > falsely assume international logos carry weight with U.S. customers
> U.S. market has nuanced segments/markets; it takes time to understand, navigate, and sort
> prematurely delegating U.S. expansion to a non-founder(s) when nothing is sorted/validated
if the US market represents > 50% of your TAM, it must have the founder at the helm to figure it out
it's far more challenging & time consuming than many give credit to -- BUT if you do, GOLD
We just went live with @bytingtheapple!
